I have a 2012 Tao tao GT5 50. It won't start up which I'm thinkin might just be the spark plug and for some reason the key won't work to unlock the seat compartment. I have played with the locking mechanism by reaching underneath but have had no luck. Can anyone give me Some tips on how the locking mechanism operates or some other way to get it to open.

If you can get the right side plastic fairing off, you should be able too reach up with a coat hanger and pull the lever back while lifting on the seat. But you don't need to open the seat compartment to accesses the spark plug. Go through the front cover in the forward seat support.

you can get the side panel off enough to reach the lock and pop the cable off and pull on it, did you try holding the seat down while turning the key?

I got the seat open. And yeah I noticed I could get to the spark plugs through the front. They checked out. its either not gettin gas or the compression is off. Haven't had time to look this week with my work schedule. Any ideas on where to start when I have the time?

Haven't had time to look this week with my work schedule. Any ideas on where to start when I have the time? The things I hear the most and see repeated often are this. Check for Spark. Pull the plug out, attach it to the plug wire, hold it near the frame carefully and be sure not to have your skin anywhere near the electrode. Make sure it grounds to the frame and try to turn it over to check for a spark. If your fuel / vacuum lines are factory, there may be an issue there. If you haven't replaced them, now's a good time. They're cheap. Pick up some vacuum lines from an auto parts store, take your old one in to compare the inner diameter. When getting fuel lines, it's best to go clear so you can see fuel flow. Get at least 3 feet of a good clear 3/16" fuel line and a fuel filter. Also if you can find some hose clamps for that size or if you're in a pinch, use zip ties for securing the fuel line. I actually re-used the clamps that were on my scoot. Check for fuel flow. Fuel Pt. 2 : If you have replaced or are planning to replace the lines, check your fuel pump/petcock. It's vacuum operated, so you may want to get a syphon pump to draw pressure on the vacuum port of the petcock or just take the line and suck on it to see if gas flows. Most suggest to replace it with a manual fuel valve. Not quite as simple when the petcock is mounted in the tank, but you can figure that out. Compression check. If you know someone with a compression gauge that works or you can buy one (be sure to test it out on a known working motor if you can to make sure it works) check for your compression. I believe 120psi is the minimum you'd want. Last I hear is valve checks. This would require you taking the top of the motor apart and checking the valve clearance. There's a video and pics on that and all of the other things I've mentioned here in the tech section. If you find that compression is low or erratic, you may have a leak somewhere. There's different methods when it comes to checking for leaks, depending if it's an intake or exhaust/positive pressure leak. So dig around and you'll find plenty here to help you. Good luck!

If you havent, i would fix the seat issu first, before digging into this wall of text.
