I think I'll try to possible restrict the air flow with tape on the box. If that fails then I'll try to adjust the c clip in the carb, however I can't do that until my friends return from a trip they took (took my good screwdriver and bits). Where is the best place to buy jets? I'd prefer to go somewhere in person and get it right then and there

I went to a local scooter store and they guy there told me that I was running too rich, and that I should downjet. I bought two smaller jets but I cannot for the life of me open up the damn carburetor. I've been here for at least an hour and a half trying to open it. The screwdriver was stripping the screws so I used some needle nose pliers gripped as tightly as I could and 2/3 screws turned but the last one won't. Short of buying a new carb I don't know what to do

So I get the carb open, and the jets I bought don't fit. I took them back and put the carb back together and hooked it up and now the scoot won't start. The float bowl won't fill. I turn the screw to drain it and nothing comes out, even after trying to start it, kick start it, etc. If I remove the fuel line leading to the tank from the petcock fuel flows free. How do I fill the float bowl?

Disconnected the vacuum, sucked it and filled the bowl, it starts now. Still doesn't run like it's supposed to, but it runs.

What kind of jets would fit in this thing? It doesn't look like most carbs, it only took 3 screws to get it open where most of them is usually four.

Maybe instead of downjetting, would a performance air filter and holes in the exhaust bring it back up to speed?

What's "this thing"? Can't give you much help or advise if we don't know what you're asking bro. To the best of my knowledge a jet is a jet. Most 4t's use a Keihin clone. Like I said before try looking in the tech library and maybe it will help you help us in know exactly what happened. There's a few small parts in the carb that can be damaged easily. Got pics you can post? :needpics:

The thread title tells what "this thing" is fellas. It's a TaoTao ATM50-A1, so it's a common 139QMB four-stroke.
Switching air filters is not hte answer if it's rich. Then maybe the new air filter is lean and you've gotten nowhere. I pretty much always advise buying a jet kit so you can tune the carburetor. PFS sells jet kits for the 139QMB powered scoots (part # 114-49). They also sell individual jets if you don't want the whole kit. Here's a little info on tuning using a fairly simple method. Takes some time, but it's not difficult.

I'm going through the same thing with my M1, spent yesterday tuning the Hoca Variator in, the rest of the CVT is stock. I also was thinking of a needle swap on the stock carb or thinking of buying a Keihin carb for the bigger venturi when I put the BBK on. This video is great, you've got to watch it a couple of times so you really get it.

From what I'm reading u are definitely too rich, a 5000 ft. elevation change is pretty huge. They are keihin main jets size 7mm overall 4mm head diameter. Jetsrus.com is a good site has most of the sizes or even ebay has cheap jet kits. Stock jet sizes are usually 78 or 80 that being said u wanna downjet cause at higher elevation the air is less dense, meaning u have less air being taken in. Downjetting will mix less gas meaning it will require less air to ignite. A performance air filter will take in more air, but with a stock engine it will just further complicated ur tuning and u will most likely need to reject anyways. Do the spark plug pull test and see what color it is. Most likely u will need to get like a 72 or 70 jet thats were I would start

I'll go ahead and order some jets then. I was looking for a way to get it going faster at the same time, I hear you lose about 20% power because of the altitude change which sucks. When I put a big bore kit on it will I be able to use the stock jet since it already runs rich?

A stock jet may work with a BBK at that elevation, but again you really need to tune it to know what's best. Not a fan of swapping in one jet on anyone's recommendation and expecting it to work well.
