Flip #10 - 2003 Derbi Atlantas. $120 Piaggio power!

Flip #10. I've made it to the double digits! Woohoo!

  This scoot has been on my local CL for a little while now and I'm happy it was still available when it came time to pick up my next flip scoot. I only paid $120 for it! Notice what he wrote in the ad? Lol I feel your pain brother- I really do...



   There is a bit of a title snafu with it though; The 'buyer' section of the title was filled out by a guy but he never titled it to himself and instead sold it. The seller that I bought it from has already taken the title to the Tax Collector (DMV) and they told him they can title it someone other than the guy named but there's an extra affidavit paper that needs to be included to do so. He already obtained the affidavit and I just need to sign it and the titling process should go smoothly. 
  The seller assured me that if I do run into a problem with titling to give him a call because he knows the guy who originally filled it out personally. Ok- so with that out of the way lets get down to the nitty gritty! I paid a whopping $120 for this Piaggio Powered beast! The seller also linked to a youtube video that showed the scoot running piss poor for just a few seconds so at least I know this thing is capable of running.

Here she is moments after I unloaded it. I bought it in the dark at 11:30PM so I didn't get to see just how rough of shape it's in till I got it home lol. Hey, 120 bux....



This thing is loaded with lizards- this is the third one that's jumped out of it now!



So from the little bit of research I've done, apparantly these '03 Derbi 2t's are Piaggio powered and quite fast. The seller already had most of the body panels off and I didn't really plan to dig into this thing right away as there's still a few details that need attention on the Pre-Bug and I already have the Craigslist ad up! I was looking at the cylinder and it seems mighty big for a 49cc so I had to pull the head off real quick and have a look. You know what I was thinking!



Just a 49cc in there but wow, sure has a lot of 'meat' around it!
The next thing that caught my eye was the 17.5 Dellorto PHVA carb- so of course I had to check that out too and I've already found my first restriction!



It's slightly larger than the Mina' stockers... Hey I have a 90cc mina a few feet away that has been begging for a bigger carb! Not much bigger I know- but hey I'll take it. The smaller Mina carb unrestricted should be > than this one restricted? So I'm doing the future owner a favor by swapping it out. Somehow that made sense in my head haha.

The rest of these pics were just me Oohing and Aahing over a new foreign (to me) 2t.... I see a nice big exhaust, some weird looking Italian made electronics, sweet looking CVT cover vent, an aftermarket side kickstand??, and the blinker buttons are cool- one on each side of the handlebars! I guess it still makes me happy that after 10 flip scoot purchases I still get excited about these goofy little two-wheeled wonders haha.....

Wow- It's always nice when you get that unexpected surprise bonus. I just took a good look at the title- and nobody ever signed the purchaser spot- It looks like it was signed with a seller and then "co-seller" but the purchaser spot is empty! Looks like the seller went through a lot of trouble for that affidavit for nothing? I'll update when I find out any info but I've dealt with the tax Collector and titles enough to think there is not a title issue here. Sweet!

Nice Niz! There was a post recently showing several restrictions including the one in the carb. I can't remember them now but check the normal places.

Nice! I have a rule to never buy a scooter in the dark after buying that Vino a while back that was in such poor condition. But I think you did pretty darn good there.

The malossi c-one racing engine is based off the piaggio motor, man thats awesome niz,since you found all those lizards that should call for some type of green paint scheme,cant wait too see final product once its all said and done,great find!!!!

Thanks fellas! I probably made a mistake and did a google image search of Derbi Atlantis and Derbi Bullet (They seem to be that same thing?) and saw a few I really liked. So now I'm thinking an all black paint job for this scoot. IDK yet if I'm going to get crazy and re-paint the whole thing like I did the bugeye- that was a lot of work- but I do already have a paint scheme brewing in my head....

I came across that post again last night. The only one I didn't understand was a reed restriction? I'll have to take a look when I dig into it to see what's up.

Damn its got a fuel reserve tank on it,the reed restriction could be that its only a "3" petal" reed cage instead of the basic "4" petal,or the area where the cage goes down has alot of case restriction,preventing good flow,my morini case has horrible case flow that needs too be worked out soon as i get all the parts i will post pictures,sorry too clog up your thread!!!

Ya I know right. I'm currently running a stock 49cc carb and exhaust on my90.The stock Mina carbs are like 14mm I think? The exhaust I'm using is from an Adly- Seems to have a semi-performance style design but I know it's restrictive for a 90cc and I've been battling with a tug-of-war between the high compression I want and high cylinder head temps. I do have a 28mm Kiehen Dslide from Brent's studies it sounds like it's not a good match for my low revving 90. I've been drooling over a Polini 24mm for when I gather the parts to re-vamp up to 54mm

I think Brent's fav is a 21 Dell of the many carbs he's run on the 90+ stuff.Ive run a 22 Mikuni 'roundie' for a while on my 103,also tried a Mikuni VM28 and a Koso 28 D slide,all ran about the same..All have an area at WFO where slightly closing the throttle makes no RPM change which leads me to believe a 21 or even a 19 would do a wonderful job on these greatly port restricted engines..

Thanks 190mech- This re-affirms my thoughts that the 28mm is just too big. I will eventually get that dang Polini carb I've been drooling over! Probably go with the 21mm...
