I haven't had much scooter work the past 2 months so I re-vamped my ad a little bit to hopefully get some more business. I found some ready made banners and a cool little guy leaning on a wrench. Is it too much? I mean is it too busy or you think it's okay? losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/mcy/2143996428.html

Looks good to me. I agree that if you want business to oick up you may want to make it sound more friendly to scoots other than Chinese. If it's something you aren't comfortable with, you could always decline a customer. You can't accept the customers that don't call though.

Yeah you guys are right. I have fixed Vespas and Taiwanese scooters and a Tomos Moped and lots of chainsaws, lawn mowers etc... It's just that I'm really only set up for the Chinese scooters if I want to turn a fast buck due to all the parts I have sitting around. I guess like you said Brent I can always turn down work. It just means wasting time on the phone or typing e-mails for $0.00 I bought $60 in parts today out of money I made today to replenish a few parts I used a few months back. I'd have to order parts and store scooters somewhere if I took on a lot of work and since the bathroom remodel I have a lot of extra building materials sitting around and piles of scrap to chop up and chuck when I get to it so not a lot of space to work with right now. I need to get off my ass and reorganize that stuff.
Anyway, I suppose I could try it for a week or two maybe after I get my house in order. Truth be told I get a lot of e-mails asking if I can fix other-than-Chinese brands anyway. I got this one an hour ago:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello,
My name is Macha. I saw your ad on Craigslist about fixing scooters. I have a '92 Yamaha Jog that is sort of taken apart. It sat in a dusty garage for a decade and then I tried to fix it a couple summers ago. I sort of took it apart and got the engine to start, but I lost steam/time. It definitely needs new cables, tires, etc. It now sits on the side of the house in pieces. I would love to get it up and running if the cost is reasonable. Can you help? Thanks.
-Macha Suzuki
I replied:
Hi Macha,
My number is: ***-***-**** Call me to set up a date and time for you to bring it to my shop for analysis or I can come over there and have a look see.
Dave -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not that I'm afraid of the Japanese or Italian scooters, I just don't want to have to put up a bunch of cash up front for parts and then have a guy leave his scooter here for months before he can pay and/or on top of that it's a liability on my part legally if their scooter gets burnt in a fire or whatever... It's a big responsibility storing someone else's property. I'm not insured so I'd have to pay cash for any losses.

Makes sense. I just had cards that said I did scooter repair and I ended up fixing a go-kart, a dirtbike, and I had a guy wanting a generator repaired. Scooter repair ends up meaning small engine repair to lots of folks reading the ads. It can be a good thing. The dirtbike was actually the highest labor job I did.

A small engine is a small engine, generally they are very similar.

Looks good to me. The pictures are a good idea, as we all know a lot of folk don't realize the brand doesn't matter as much as the style. Maybe just ad in at the bottom, " I also do other small engine repair." Might get you some more jobs.
