I have a 2014 TaoTap Thunder and from what I understand these have the high torque motors that I have heard do 45-50 out of the crate.. Mine stops at 35. I have put a high performance carb, air filter, and a no rev cdi. I have also tuned the carburetor. What else am I missing? This thing struggles up the hills worse then anyone's where I'm at.. I do weigh about 220 pounds. But valves are set properly and has a NGK spark plug gapped at the correct size...

That info is a misstatement and an advertising gimmic to sell these scooters. As far as I know, there is no such thing as a different stock 'High Torque' GY6 engine. At 220lbs and with the weight of that scooter, max 35mph is about average from what I've seen and heard on this forum. Going up hills will be slow. 15-20mph depending on the hill. Show me a stock GY6 50cc engine that'll do 45-50 and I'll show you a million dollars... or an alien... or big foot.. To get better performance, you'll need to go with a Big Bore Kit, and there are many other things to also pump it up a bit like Big Valve Heads, CVT and clutch mods, etc... Now if your scooter is a 150cc and doing that, that's different, but with a 50cc stock GY6 engine, that's about what is to be expected. My wife has a Yamaha Vino 50cc stock that was blowing the pants off my GY6 scooter until I finally got all the mods done on mine and tuned it up properly.

Thanks man, that's what I thought but I wanted to be reassured. I am going to be making custom welds for the mounts and putting a 200cc motor in ole PT. Then she won't have no problems with speed or hills.

I agree, 35MPH is quite typical. My TaoTao would go about 40 stock... but that was with a tail wind or something to my benefit and/or tucked down the best I could to cut wind resistance. Real world WOT cruise speeds for me were more like 30-35MPH. I'm all for seeing an engine swap, but if all you want is 40-50MPH you can do it with some work on the stock engine.

If you're going from 50cc to something bigger, remember that depending on your state, some require titling, licensing, registration, insurance, etc. Big Bore Kits, Big Valve heads, etc in a 50cc engine does not make it obvious to police that you have a bigger engine. Going to a 150cc or above may so keep that in mind.. I've got a BBK with a BVH, A9 racing cam, etc and was going 44mph the other day GPS verified and still climbing in speed. I just didn't have enough straight road where I was at to go any faster. Some are getting 50-55mph GPS verified.

Yea I am going to get it licensed and insured for sure. Thanks buddy. I love the way the thunder handles and rides so far. Its by far the most comfortable Chinese scoot I've had. I loved this thing. I have put 500+ miles on it in a matter of a week and a half. Bought it at 0 kilometers and almost to 800 on the second week.

Ouch I didn't think about that. What about with steel braided brake lines?

Just giving a reminder for saftey's sake. 49cc scooter brakes , suspension , steering. All should be beefed up to handle larger engines etc. If doing extreme swaps.

Same here all stock on my sunny atm, 15-20-25mph up steep hills which we have a lot of, I weigh 215lbs, I hit 33-35mph against the wind, going with the wind down steep hills I can hit 43mph but the bike shakes, going with the wind on a straight away I hit 40-41mph. Can't wait to slap my bbk in, tune the carb and then the cvt Be hitting much better speeds up hills and take off.

I have a Taotao VIP that is all stock except a keihin Carb. I manage to hit between 40-45 (verified via 2 different gps apps) with enough flat road (about 5 miles or so). It pretty much jumps up to 35 and slowly creeps up. Would be nice if I was brave/confident enough to attempt a bbk.

As stated above the..the Thunder has just your stock run of the mill..generic 50cc engine. They are not high torque..high power etc.. I own one and have worked on many for customers. With the mods I have in my signature line below..as it says I can get to 50 on a normal slightly breezy day and 55 on a very calm day.. Yesterday either my GPS had a glitch or I got lucky cause it read 57mph for just over a mile until I came to a hill. Granted at 57mph I was turning over 8,400 rpm which is above what the engine was supposedly designed for. Although many professional builders tell me they can turn their engines up to just around 10,000 rpm with no problem. I would think that would grenade these tiny engines..so I am going to up gear mine to keep it below 8,000 rpm. Glenn
2014 TaoTao Thunder 80cc BBK 2k clutch springs 1.5k contra spring 7gram KOSO sliders with KOSO variator Performance exhaust A9 Cam 165 psi compression(I am using the stock head as the BBK head had less compression and gave less power as well) 50-55mph(No not Kph) GPS on a level surface with my skinny butt on it
