I just installed a new 80cc BBK for my pronto/sun50. Was starting to tune it (jetting/carb work.) seemed like it was running very lean, and i had adjusted the valves using feeler gauges, sooo im pretty sure i got those right,(did .003 intake and .0035 exhaust.) i tried adjusting them a few times though with a few diff combos just to make sure that wasn't the problem. so, it was able to start(have to kick it cuz the electric starters not functioning properly or not getting enough power, i dunno its a new battery and i checked the gearing so... >.<)
anyways it will be kind of hard to get it to start, but after i get it going its pretty easy to get it going again. ive ridden it a few times too and it felt completely fine the times ive ridden it, definitely felt the upgrade, it sped up way faster, i made sure to stay under 30 though i know the piston needs to be broken in. it was running kinda hot though, i meant it didnt seem horribly bad or anything it just seemed to heat up kind of quick.
i didnt jet the pilot yet, it kinda had some metal shavings inside of it, or it had been drilled badly at the factory or something. But I mean, wanted to jet it up a couple sizes anyway because of the BBK, but i didnt wanna mess it up cuz i havent done it much yet. so i switched it out with a different one, BUT IT WAS a jet from a 2 stroke 24mm oko carb. the OKO carb came with some spare jets. and i figured id play with one of those instead, and if i messed up on jetting it out, i wouldn't screw up the old one. did it matter that it was a 2 stroke pilot jet? I'm pretty sure that wouldn't cause engine problems and oil getting in by the rocker arms, but i figured id ask.
so the main problem is, i was in the middle of getting the jetting right, i had already started it a few times and was kinda having trouble starting again. I was able to get it going and it sounds nice, only thing is, it started to not hold an idle(it had held an idle before, even though the idle screw had to be turned wayyy up.) But now, even with the idle screw turned aalllllll the waayyy up it still is having problems idling and starting. Then i get it running and it was kind of holding an idle kinda slightly sorta, next thing i notice, smoke starts coming from the exhaust, and it started getting heavier,(white smoke btw, oil as far as i know) im not sure if this has been a problem for a bit but im pretty sure it hasnt, the smoke problem just started today.
so i thought, "wow, the piston rings are shot already? whaaaaat?" so i opened her up and found a decent amount of oil in the head and around the valves. i checked the piston and it looked black like it had been running pretty hot. same with the head, but it seemed like the rings were okay, and i tried re adjusting the valves again, slapped it back together and same thing, smoke keeps coming and when i opened it AGAIN, oil was STILL getting in there!!! it got so hot in there it like, kinda melted/messed up the metal gasket was nuts. still on there but wow.
so whatchu guys think? are my rings shot for some reason already? are my valves maybe screwed? i feel like it isn't the valves because last time my valves were shot there was smoke coming out of the breather hose not the exhaust(well i think my rings had been blown then as well but mrah, not exactly too positive on that one, i had changed the whole head assembly that time as well so im not too sure). But if the rings are shot is there an easy way to tell? I've seen straight broken rings come off of a piston before. so i knew those were bade haha, but its kinda hard for me to tell if their bad when their not broken, and they seemed like they compressed fine. i mean the whole kit was new, cylinder, head, piston/rings, and when i opened up the engine it looked bit black/burnt in there like it had been running really hot. but i didn't see what seemed like any major damage, everything honestly looked fine to me >.< but then again I'm not sure if i have the best eye for it. ALSO, i am using all new gaskets too.
also im using 10w-30 motor oil, any chance that, that could be causing the smoke? my friend said i need to be using performance oil or at least a type of higher synthetic. so i was wondering if that might be what caused everything, or if it is the reason there is smoke at all.(like maybe it is just the oil?? i mean, probably not, but a man can hope >.>)
Im also running this with an ncy exhaust, its like that really long one that looks kinda like a rocket or something lol. id gotten it off a parts bike i had picked up, so that was a used exaust, not sure how many miles the previous owner had put on it.
also the carb is just a stock 18mm carb, it was a new one off of ebay though, i just wanted to make sure when i was working on the bike that the carb wouldnt be a problem. maybe it made it a problem?? i did adjust the needle a lot, i was trying to get the bike to start/idle better. and as i said before i was doing some work with the pilot jet.even though everytime, i had to keep having the idle screw turned wayyyy up. and like i said i changed the pilot jet, better i dunno just throwing it out there so you guys have more info.
any advice here helps guys! i have a pretty decent knowledge about parts and the engine in general, and not afraid to get in there and figure it out. But it just seems to be one of those wheres theres just one problem after another. and i just dont wanna end up causing more damage. soo id just rather get some advice on this one lol. >.< ill get some pics up here when i get the chance, But until then, if anyone has any idea whats going on with what ive described plleeeaaase let me know! im going too refrain from doing anything major till i get a better idea of whats going on. but i might try some things i.e. getting new oil/ going to get some xtra rings and mebe change them while im waitin for a response.
and oooonnee moooorrreee thiiinggg. if i had the airbox CONNECTED it would hardly start or wouldnt start at all. With it DISCONNECTED it was much easier, it would start pretty easily, just like 4-10 kicks if i had'nt started it for a bit. worst times was like 20 which seemed a bit much. and anytime i put my hand on the carb while it ran it would die almost instantly. soo seems like compression/air stuffz. just trying to get you guys as much info as possible.
Thanks Again!
