If your a legal citizen of the US. ,just get a licence or whats required & go riding! They usually require a license basicly for ID. & that you completed some sort of driver saftey course at one time or another. Helps keep the drunk/crackhead drivers whom lost thier driving privileges off the roads. I can't get a driver's license because you have to pass a driving test with a car and I don't drive cars. Personally I think it's beyond stupid to have to pass a driving test with a car for permission to drive things that are not cars.

In Maryland you need either a driver's license or a moped permit ( more info) to operate a scooter or moped up to 50cc at up to 30MPH. You also need insurance and a one time registration. Regarding wanting to travel and not being able to go on interstates, don't let that stop you. I take back roads on long trips. Nothing crazy, just a couple hundred miles in a day or so. It takes more planning, but I think it's a more pleasant experience since you're not being ran over by cars doing 80 constantly and the scenery tends to be better and more twisties.

Same here..I have traveled to other states without using an interstate. I frequently ride to Indiana (92 miles there) just for sh*ts and giggles..but also to buy cheap Smokes and Fireworks that we cannot buy in Michigan.. A long leisurely yet very enjoyable ride. If he Googles it..he will find that MANY folks have even done trips from New York and other New England states..all the way to the Grand Canyon and even further...to California..

This is why road laws are so confusing and contradict themselves. On this website: www.dmv.org/la-louisiana/other-types.php...it says if they are under 5 horse power no license is required. However when you go down under the scooters section it says if your caught driving a scooter on public roads you will be ticketed. What in the...? Can anyone make sense of this?

So far North Carolina is looking like my best bet. I wish I didn't have to leave the place I've been living at for 29 years just to be able to freely use the road and even then I'll feel like I'm trapped in a box.. a very large box. Lol unless of course surrounding states have the same respect for moped drivers. I'll look into that. I'm not making any decisions yet so I still want to see what my options are.

Wow , that totally doesnt make sense. Its stating moped/motorised bike under 5 hp. & highway You may want to stop in your local dmv etc. & question this , totally contradicts itself. A few years back here in Delaware a large group including myself visited our congressman , they stated 50cc scooters needed pedals to qualify as mopeds. Which totally made no sense at all . Finally passed , & dmv reworded moped classed language. 55cc or under , 3.9 hp not to exceed 25mph , non highway use. But on the good side dmv employees here are retarded & are more worried about reflectors then bbk's etc. As long as my scoots have a sticker saying 50cc it passes inspection. Last scoot i took in i put a stupid amount of reflectors on it just to troll em!

I told you they contradict each other and totally confuse you. Just call your local police and ask them what they go by. I am sure its a question they get a lot.
My brother just came to get his a while ago. We looked at Ohio's Laws and he is screwed. He has to get an endorsement, plates and insurance! to ride a scooter that might do 30 with him on it. He is a big boy, close to 300lbs I think.

Michigan looks like a nice place. It's a long way from home though and I bet the winters are brutal there.

According to this site that is not entirely true. It says here a driver's license is required. It's a shame. I'd rather live in TN than Michigan but only because I've been to TN a few times. www.moped2.org/laws/Tennessee.htmwww.dmv.org/tn-tennessee/other-types.php
