(still tryin to traverse the site for proper locations for threads, so be patient w/ me, please...) I really didn't even know that 2T scoots have seperate oil needs... anyhwo, I just went to Cycle Gear to purchase tranny oil, so i could change asap (WE all should get in a habbit of changing all fluids / filter asap whenever we purchase used scoots/bikes/cars. well, unless you know exactly the history of the vehicle. i'm sure everyone knows that...). My Vespa manual indicates to use "TUTELA ZC 90" oil type in the amount of 5 oz. I don't even know what TUTELA is, but i did assume 90 meant the weight... So, my question is, is using the Bel-Ray product ok, for both Vespa and the Yamah Vino 2T 50cc?? Should I use synthetic instead??? And what is the difference between trasmission oil and Hypoid oil??

You need gear oil. And the gears in cars are hypoid gears, so I don't understand the difference, except for maybe marketing? Transmission oil is for auto trannies in cars.
Myself, I use synthetic for everything. The only time I don't is when I'm breaking in a top end.

Minarelli's use 40W gear oil (look up the Jog manual). When i used to work at a scooter shop i used 80W90 all the time for minarellis, piaggios, morini's, honda's and peugeot's. Myself i use this one in my Axis (minarelli Works fine eventhough the manual says 40W. I'm not afraid im doing something wrong or using the wrong oil since i used to work on 100's of scoots and always used this oil and never had any problems or customers reporting problems or any other indication it wasn't the right oil. I'm pretty sure Piaggio's use the same 90W oil i use. I bought the castrol bottle i use now at a local 2T piaggio scooter racing engine builders shop, twins scooter service. He assured me i needed this, and this guy knows what he's talking about.

Some manuals say to use 10W30-10W40 motor oil, but viscosity ratings for gear oils and engine oils aren't the same. 75W90 gear or is pretty similar to those, with additives that better suit a gearbox. I used Mobil 1 75W90 in all of mine.

Id suggest to specificlly go for gearbox oil or hypoid oil since that kinda oil is better suited for very high pressures (between the gear tooths).
I once read something about it but can't recall the exact theory behind it. But it has to do with the way that oil is formulated. Every oil is made for, has it's own special application. Gearbox oil is specially formulated for applications where the oil gets subjected to very high pressures since inside a gearbox oil gets squeezed around trough the gears.
