Talked to my mechanic god of a brother and he suggested I check to see if the exhaust is plugged up. Might make sense with how much soot I found in the exhaust port and how many miles were on the engine. If swapping that doesn't work, I'll swap the head and see. I don't know how much more stooping my back can take.

Not exhaust. Honestly feels like it's stuck in high gear. Before I bought it, I replaced the clutch on it for a co-worker because one of the arms had broken off

Have you done the marker test on the variator to see if you're getting full belt travel?

You mentioned that you previously replaced the clutch. Is it possible that the contra spring is way to stiff for the rollers you are using?

Figured it out. After trying a third variator, from my daily driver, it worked fine. Started examining the original variator pieces to see what could possibly be causing such a serious issue. Weights were new, nothing was cracked, faces looked good. Then I noticed that the backing plate didn't move very well. The three little plastic sliders were just a little too thick and were sticking to the glides they rode on. Sanded them down until it moved freely but wasn't loose and bouncing around, and drove fine after that. The inner face must have been getting stuck and not letting it shift.
