Trying to get the electric start worked out on a scoot I'm selling.
The issue is that it that the bendix isn't engaging regularly, and when it does, it sometimes over engages and moves too far out and binds on the variator. I have to bump the start button several times before it will catch and turn over. All the parts on the bendix move fine and I can't see anything wrong with the kick cover that would let it move around.
Any ideas?

What is the make & model of scooter ?
Are you trying to electric start the engine with the cvt cover off ?

Sometimes the springs in a starter bendix can become weak and not engage properly. Or it could have worn teeth. There is also a small ridge around the shaft of the bendix towards the outer end. If that becomes worn down it can allow the spring retainer to extend further than it should. IMO I would just get a new bendix.

I do believe there is a washer/spacer in the "hole" that receives the bendix shaft,

Yes I just had that problem there is a spacer that sits in engine without it it'll do as u explained all else seemed fine till I just thought of putting that spacer there.
Good luck.
