I'm not sure if anyone here realizes it but right now 35 of our fellow scooteristas are now crossing the country in an intrepid rally (it's not a race!) held every two years called the Scooter Cannonball. They came from all over the country and some from Canada to start in Fernandina Beach, Florida and 11 days later they will be in Everett, Wa. Here are links to a live race tracking map and the home page with current results and roster click here. Hey if they happen to be coming through your town, maybe go out to the route and cheer them on! Who knows, in 2 years for the 2018 Cannonball, it may be you out there running (Niz, drc174, you listening??)! There are 7 classic Vespa's that are either P series or running P series engines in this years race and they are doing well.

Impressed with what DaBinChe accomplished in 2014 on a Honda Elite 110 . . rode from California up to Alaska . . then to Louisiana while accumulating the most Scooter Cannonball points . . then to the southern tip of the Florida Keys . . then back to California.
Vintage engines appear to have a lot of challenges.
How to enhance engine longevity discussions are typically NOT an element of this forum . . more likely engine desecration to the point of destruction . . with elevated stature for an impaired driving conviction, or at least a "laws don't apply to me" mentality.

Of course you do know he is on a 1958 Vespa VNA. I would say that vintage is a understatement! 3 other Vintage Vespa riders have not had any problems and most are running BBKs and pipes. One of the vintage bikes is 4th and the other in 6th. With the handicapping system, the vintage bikes could be handing out lots of challenges in the coming days!

How to enhance engine longevity discussions are typically NOT an element of this forum I'm pretty sure you can find a lot of info here, I'd venture to say more than anywhere else, about the PDI process on Chinese scooters. Plenty of posts about higher tier scooters. Lots of posts stating that max reliability is likely to come from a 49cc, mild engine builds, and proper modification, service, and maintenance techniques. more likely engine desecration to the point of destruction If you never push anything to the edge, you never learn the limits. We don't want to be the folks content to stay put, believing they'll plummet off of the edge of the Earth. We want to see what's out there. with elevated stature for an impaired driving conviction, I can't stand the idea that everyone that likes to ride a small scooter must have a drunk driving charge and license revocation. I'm sure there are and have been plenty on this and every small scooter forum, but scooters aren't just for people that don't have a license. In fact, you can't even ride a scooter in many areas without a license. Many of us have multiple other vehicles that we could ride or drive legally, but choose to scoot. If someone has lost their license for a DUI, they are welcome here though. Everyone has made mistakes in their life. Some just won't admit to them so it's easier to pass judgement on others. or at least a "laws don't apply to me" mentality. I've told people many times to check their local laws and often discourage big engine swaps for the risk of trouble. If the worst thing someone ever does is exceed the displacement limit by 30cc or make a few more horsepower than stated in laws written by people that have never piloted a scooter... I think we're doing alright.

Exactly Brent! To ride a scoot legally here in KY you have to have a VALID automobile or motorcycle license. Loose your license to a D.U.I. and, no, you can not ride a scooter legally.
Why do folks continue to try to spread this myth? The folks around here with multiple D.U.I.'s ride bicycles and yet no one sees a bike and says..."There goes another drunk".
It is hard to combat ignorance I suppose.

It is hard to combat ignorance I suppose. Bill Iv had this same discussion with a friends co-worker who's license has been suspended for a DWI. It boils down to the whole under 50cc myth.(anyone can drive without a license) In the state of CT, you must have a valid drivers license and be the minimum age of 16. It also states its for "2 wheel" vehicles. As for trikes, 3 wheels(scooter style)not sure, sorta a murky topic. I know the Spyder trikes are treated like motorcycles and you need the motorcycle endorsement/reg/insurance. There is rumors they are trying to create a 3 wheel endorsement, but its still going to fall under motorcycle guide lines. Iv had convo's with parents that got their kid scooters to go to their part time jobs or do paper routes and I just cringe. In 97 the state made the same rules apply to mopeds(the 2 wheel thingies with PEDALS) too. Not sure how the rules apply to motorized bicycles, there are a few of them around here.

The rules and scoot/moped definitions vary state to state. A person just has to be aware of the actual laws and rules in the state they live in.
In Kansas one has to actually read the laws even if they read like a third grader wrote them. Even the Highway Patrol website that is quoted here on 49ccscoot is inaccurate. The DMV staff is ignorant of the law, they just want to collect fees and taxes. People call them for advice, forgetting to realize they are petty bureaucrats and just want money and to feel powerful. Kansas is a very backward state but the moped rules are fairly relaxed. A scoot still requires a driver's license to operate. The governor, most legislators, and most of the people in Kansas are morons, -dumber than a box of rocks as the saying goes.
Ignorance is not really bliss... Living with ignorant fools is Hell. They say ignorance can be cured but not when combined with stupidity.
Kansas sucks!

I live in one of the few states that still allow you to operate a scooter that is under 50cc without a license. they just recently defined them as class b motor driven cycles and now make you plate them. if you don't have a valid DL then you must pass a written test to show you are not an idiot. and if you get a dui you have a waiting period before you can even do that.
I lost my DL in 2009. I got a single dwi. I had a blood alcohol content of 0.09, I swear I felt sober as a judge. 0.08 is the legal limit. however back in 2003 when I was a senior in high school, I managed to get two wreckless driving violations (who hasn't driven too fast). so with thos three violations happening within a 10 year period I was labled a habitual offender and issued a 10 year suspension.
every scooterist is not a drunk, and neither is everyone with a dui.

every scooterist is not a drunk, and neither is everyone with a dui. What he said! I ride a scoot and I have never had a DUI. I have driven a car a few times when I am sure I was over the limit though. I know better and I regret doing it even though there were no mishaps. I used to ride bicycles and other two wheel vehicles. Not any more though due to balance and other neurological problems. I do have a motorcycle endorsement on my driver's license. I am licensed to drive just about anything, but none of them big flying thingies....

Was in a Mexican restaurant Friday
At the next table was one huge woman that ordered Margaritas from the time she walked in.... She definitely drove there because she talked about parking her car next to an "idiot pickup driver" that was too close to the line. No way she left anywhere near the limit.
Point being....1:00 in the afternoon on any weekday is probably a very dangerous time to be out on a scooter.

That 'huge' woman probably needs to park far away from any other vehicle so she can open her car door far enough to get out. That poor truck probably has a 'huge' dent in the side.
Let the flames roll, -but I have reported hundreds of drivers to the police for DWI/DUI back when I worked in a service station. They were all far over the limit. I even 'delayed' a few until the police arrived while dealing with their vehicle 'problems'.
BTW- I can count the number of times I have been DUI on the 'fingers' of one hand. Probably the worst was under the influence of Valium after oral surgery. The doctor should have called someone, or a cab, for me. There was the time I had to drive about 75 yards through a motel parking lot after visiting a bar with friends that came into that same motel after the same flight. It was very slow drive. My rental car was parked perfectly but left unlocked all night. My suitcase was in the trunk...
