How long should filings be seen in the transmission oil? I changed the final drive gears about 1000 miles ago and after multiple oil changes still seeing (what I consider) a lot of material in the oil.

if they aren't gone after the first time changing, I would take it apart to clean out the gear box, and make sure its just leftovers from the manufacturing process and not new wear. that's just me though.

If you have a magnetic drain plug, it's not uncommon to see a small amount of metal there at any point. If you're seeing a lot of particles in the oil, you may have a bearing going bad or something.

Were you getting material in the oil before you changed the gears?
Is the amount of material decreasing with each oil change you did?

Like Brent said, There should be a little.
Next oil change I would flush and drain with kerosene. Fill the gearbox and spin the rear tire in both directions for several minuits(while on center stand) DO NOT DRIVE IT. Drain into a small plastic container and take a magnet and put it under it to attract any steel filings. I usually do this several times.(flushing) When it flushes clean I leave both drain and fill open to evap any residual kero then refill with oil.

Were you getting material in the oil before you changed the gears? Is the amount of material decreasing with each oil change you did? I was getting very little out, but the gears only had 600 miles on them. Jeff reminded me of an issue with the casting of the new gears...there was a "dent" in one of them. I filed it to what I thought was close to smooth...thinking that the gears would run-in. Now I am beginning to question how close to smooth I actually was.
It does seem to be getting decreasing...when I changed the oil last night, I left the drain plug out and flushed some through and overfilled the case and left the fill plug out to drain down to the proper level.

Well...I've ridden about another 500 miles...changing the oil about every 100 miles. Still seeing filings. The filings were pushing my OCD into overdrive so I ordered a set of Hoca 46/16 gears. I will pull it apart look everything over...hopefully no bearings are trashed.

Tore into the gearbox tonight. Bearing look and feel OK. The gears that I installed don't look quite right. Those members with some metallurgy experience may be able to tell me what is going on. I do have a new set of HOCA gears on the way.

Wow, there appears to be a lot of pitting in your second photo. I am just guessing here but probably just chalk it up to Chinese metallurgy and whatever bad batch they made that day. See what others here say but I doubt it is anything you did, or did not do.

Well your OCD has served you well. Looks like there is something going on with the intermediate gears(small gear 2nd pic) Hopefully the new gears come with that smaller gear/shaft in the second pic. Usually the bigger gear is pressed off the intermediate shaft and the new one is pressed on. Some kits come with the new gear already assembled. Maybe this explains it better. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/945/final-drive-gear-installation-tos

When I swapped them out earlier this year, I tried using a ball joint press...couldn't budge them...I had to use a friends 20 ton press.
Can't see it in the pics very well, but the markings on the big gear (1st pic) look odd...if it was in a pump I would have guessed the pump was suffering cavitation.

New set of Hoca 42/16 gears arrived! Installed last night, washed everything out with brake cleaner before install then overfilled the gearbox spun everything by hand and drained. Refilled to the proper level with 75W90.
Now if it would ever quit raining I could put some miles on them.

Finally stopped raining! I was able to get about 20 miles in last night...I was expecting the taller gears to slow the take off and hill climbs...didn't really notice any difference, but it does seem to be holding the redline longer from launch.
Plan on changing the oil at about 100 miles.

Changed the oil last night after 80 miles. As expected with new gears...there were filings, but I think they were finer. Rode 40 miles after the oil changes and just pulled the plug, very few filings on the magnet. May just have this solved. Had a lot of friends look at the old gearset....general consensus is they had a bad heat treatment.
