Update: Bad stator exciter coil. Suggestion to find OEM or high quality replacement.
Thanks, Don
OLD post:
I am seeking a decent aftermarket replacement for my 2001. There are tons out there but I want to stay away form the aluminum cased(so called performance) & the cheap ones and prefer a OE fitting one.(mount in the same location as stock)
Any preferred choice(source) or one you were happy with.

I've been looking at these lately and I'm wondering if they are all the same. Stage6 and Athena make them but I think they may just the cheapo with an expensive sticker.

Thanks again ryan_ott, I ordered this one from Scrappy to test with. I spent a good couple hours checking everything from fender to fender this morning. Checked Kill switch, Key switch, Stator and Pickup, Coil, and as much wiring I could verify. I am hoping its CDI. I usually have some luck chucking them in the freezer for a few hours and getting them to temporally work but was not lucky in this case. Just weird that it ran well to our destination and when we went to leave it was dead. Iv had one die in the middle of riding. I would think they would die while in use, and not at rest.

I dont mean to hijack your thread, but does anyone know if there is swapability between the Honda AF16 and the Kymco version motor as far as the stator, rotor, and CDI go? One of my Kymco ZX scoots came to me with a GY6 CDI spliced in. It seemed to run fine but I did not get to check it performance wise.

I will most likely be looking for a nice iggy to fit the Kymco at some point.

These (screen shots) were taken from both service manuals Honda Kymco I want to say the stator/pickup assemblys are the same based on above pictures. Stock Kymco ZX50 CDI's have wire leads coming off of them with plugs. Stock Honda uses their own rectangular plug(5-6) pin Stock GY6 look like this. I believe Kymco's ZX and most GY6's are a/c. Iv tried connecting a GY6 to my Kymco and all though the plugs look alike, they do NOT connect together. Hope this helps.

Well I got my CDI today in the mail and installed it and still no spark. oldgeek , I stand corrected. I did read somewhere that there was a front facing pickup and a rear facing pickup on the stators. I pulled the shrouds of of my Elite to find this. So the manual I have does not reflect this verision, it only showed the front facing pickup like the Kymco ZX50 engine.

Well there's your problem ya need an alternator. Remember that the Service manual covers(at least the 1 I'm looking through) 1988-2001 and Honda makes small changes all the time and it looks like they just rotated it from the 4 O'Clock to the 7 O'Clock position. Because the '88-93 engine(AF05E) was different then the '94-01 engine(AF/16-18) which is very similar to the KYMCO engine so that maybe why the pictures look different in the 2 manuals.

Well I wanted to rule out the stator the other day. The exciter made a/c power(at least the multi-meter said so)when cranking the engine, but I could not get continuity or measure ohms. I thought it was an issue with my leads on the multi meter. So today I pulled the plastics, shroud, flywheel, and stator. I checked continuity of the harness and that was good. Was nice having the stator out so you can check each winding. The exciter winding had silicon sealer that acted like damper where the leads came out and terminated on the solder posts. If I pushed on the silicon I could get the gauge to fluctuate. I tired picking the silicon out and tried to re-solder it back together, but that didn't work(yes, I scrapped the coating of the wires) So seems finding and OEM stator is a joke online, most places say its discontinued item or call first. I might try the Honda shop here locally and see how much they will overcharge me. Iv found a couple aftermarket ones, but not sure if I want to go cheapo in that department.(unless others here have had luck with them. Here is an interesting find. 6 Poles Stator Magneto For GY6 50cc 139QMBHonda's Front 139QMB Front Honda's Rear 139QMB Rear Honda's Dimmensions I know someone will see that I measured outside to outside on the holes, well here is a nifty little trick(as long as the holes are the same diameter) You measure one hole and set the calipers to zero, then measure the the outside to outside and you get your center to center dimension. By setting the zero you basically canceling out one hole diameter or half a diameter on both sides. The only things that different are the connectors, and a couple wire colors. Who the of thunk a 4t part would fit a 2t scooter. The end is near.

Back to the aftermarket cdi units. I tested the stock and found no curve at all 17/18 btdc. I ordered a malossi tc cdi. Initial timing is around 18/20 deg, peak is right about 8 btdc. My timing gun is being a pain, when I fix it I'll make a video to graph it. No test rides yet but snapping the throttle it's very responsive.

I got my "donor" stator from Ebay today and swapped the harness over. Will be interesting to see if the doner swap will work. New-Left Old-Right I ordered this one as well which should be a direct fit. I have three scooters that use this part, so have a spare on hand makes sense.

Should equal nice powerful low RPM performance and safe High revving WOT. Vedy niiice.

There was a noticeable difference in performance with the new cdi. Takeoff is insane, used to pull the front up a little before now it's a wheel stander which I need to address so I don't kill my forks. Nice little upgrade.
