Ok so I had been having issues with my electric starter on my 50cc tao tao scooter it's a 2015 if that matters. Anyway, at first the starter would make a clicking noise sometimes or it woukd just spin free and sometimes it would catch and start so not a big deal when it was warm outside to just kickstart it but now it's cold and only getting colder so I decided to attempt to rebuild may starter... Failure of EPIC proportions. SO , bought a new starter motor and just to be safe a new solenoid I Installed it myself like every other part on the bike, so it still doesn't work i can hear it kind of weakly try to turn the engine over but nothing happens Anybody have any helpful ideas? Also if I'm at W.O.T and press the horn button its really quiet but when I let off the throttle it gets alot louder but still sounds weak. Also if I turn the key on without the engine running and squeeze the brake lever the back light on the speedo and the small running light under the headlight shut off, are these problems all a result of a bad battery? If ANYONE HAS ANY GOOD IDEAS. Please help me! THANKS again you guys/girls are amazing! I love!! 49ccscoot!!!

ALSO, I forgot to mention I checked and the solenoid is getting some power when I touch a screwdriver to both terminals it makes small sparks like it should.

I would grab an ohm meter and start with the battery. If the battery is ok, (may be a connection) I would starting with the ground then work my way from the battery to the starter.

Sounds like a potentially weak battery. Try another battery. If you try a good battery and the same thing.....
Probably not grounded properly.
To rule out a grounding issue.... Get a set of jumper cables..... Connect one end of the negative cable to the negative terminal of the battery. Connect the other end of the negative cable to the engine (valve cover is good)
Try to start it. if it now starts over fine you need to run a 12 gauge ground wire from the battery negative to the motor.
If it's neither of those, from your OP, there could be a short somewhere.

Sounds like the battery to me....you should get more than "small sparks" when shorting the solenoid, you should get some heavy arcing. Check out the things the folks here suggested but my money is on a bad battery. You can have it load tested at any auto parts store or place that sells new batteries.

if your having problems starting your Tao Tao dirt bike. one it could be your starter motor. i have a Tao Tao dirt bike and mine wasn't turning over. so i took out my e start or starter motor. and one it could be your brushes or you armature. the brushes are the little cube copper pieces in the starter assembly. the armature is the long cylindrical piece in the starter assembly that holds to the magnetic housing. my armature was chipped so when i go to e start it, it would turn until it hits that piece. the best thing to do is to replace the whole starter motor instead of looking for parts. the hard thing is finding the parts for the bike. another problem could be your carburetor, take apart your carburetor and clean it out. make sure your oil is clean and your tank is full as well. these are thing that are just good to check on or change if needed.another thing you guys can check is if you wires are all plugged in and nothing fell out or got cut while riding it. hopefully i helped any of you guys.

Ok just to not leave any of you helpful guys hanging I tried the battery with the different clips it started right up in half a turn lol. So I know that problems answer now. So on to the next one. I'll be back later when I figure out exactly how to word it although one of my problems is posted under another post.

Oh here's a good one I'm going to do a 50mm bbk with bvh and already installed the a9 cam from previous advice, we'll bow I have the whole bbk though it's not installed yet, ok anyway what I want to know is can i remove the vacuum powered petcock and replace it with a manual one? I have seen somewhere that this is possible and since I'm trying to eliminate as many vacuum lines as possible I clearly want to switch to a manual also so I can turn the gas off.

You can remove it and replace it with a manual cut off. I do that a lot. Installing the 50mm BBK with the 23mm valve head should be fine. Your compression will be low but you are less likely to damage the engine from heat. If you haven't read this thread specifically about the 50mm BBK, you might want to. All about the 50mm BBK

The old starter got destroyed when I attempted to rebuild it. Lesson learned. But I still didn't throw it away. And from now on before I try things I'll ask someone that knows something about whatever task I have at hand. In my defense I watched a ton of how to videos on rebuilding starter motors it seemed SO EASY which it is I just went all in and just opened it up making the brushes almost impossible to get back into place and when I almost had it right one broke off so I just said to hades with this I'm buyin a new one. Only cost 18$ I would have much rather put it towards something else.my stock battery is totally hit though when I put it on my trickle charge it goes instantly from charging to charged and on the bike it's dead so it's obvious to me the battery is no good, unless there's some secret I don't know about. I can't seem to get my idle right lately no matter how I adjust it it runs great at WOT but on take off bogs and acts funny.

I have saved a few batteries from the recycle pile by adding distilled water to each cell. Probably best to just replace the battery especially if this is your daily driver, but you could play with the dead battery and see of it'll take and hold a charge after refilling the cells...
