Nice friend you have then... Never lend vehicles to friends no matter how much you trust them. They crash em, damage em, get you speeding tickets or get arrested and have your scooter impounded.
Good luck bud.

Yeah, I know. He's like 250lbs and doesn't believe in dodging pot holes either!

I guess your buddy owes you $250 or a scoot. Seems fair to me.

Imagine loaning out a scooter and the borrower crashes into some guy who's in the prime of life with a family to support. You might be sued for a half a million bucks or more and the widow just might win.
Probably none of us has a half million laying around for the plaintiff to seize, it's true. But we sure are all capable of owing a half million. So you can kiss your retirement goodbye.
This is pretty unlikely, I know. But it's not impossible. And it's a terrible price to pay for helping out someone who won't take his responsibilities seriously.

Well that blows. The only two times I borrowed a buds scooter('88 Jog,'05 Ruckus) both times they broke down. I ended up getting the Jog for my efforts to get her up and running again and the other time my friend was just upset at himself because it let me down. But if I did anything to them I would have payed to fix them it's the fair and right thing to do.

Heck, I have had ppl just show up at my house that I don't know and I've helped them out. One guy on a Chinese scooter happened to have a Chinese valve stem fail in front of my house. I can't even explain how low the odds are of that in an area where I hardly ever even see another scooter and I heard it let go just as he was passing the house. I loaded his scoot in the truck and took him home for nothing. Another guy lives down the road and showed up to introduce himself because of some scooter troubles and I ended up with his scoot on my workbench doing a few things at no charge. I can't even imagine having it impounded or crashing someone else's scooter and not doing anything at all about it. I understand that money may not be available, but even without cash there has to be some sort of help to you that could be offered. Even if it's not scooter related... like cut your grass a few times or household repairs or just anything that would help you out and show some respect/appreciation.

Well I guess he did feel bad after all. He decided to give me his scoot. It's not a 150 but it is nicer than mine. Well I guess that's in the eye of the beholder. I liked mine a lot more. So I'll probably end up selling this one and buying another pos that I can fix up. On another note. I to have people come here all the time to have their scoots fixed. The only way I charge is if they need a part that I have and if I don't have extra. So that way I don't screw myself. Lots of people where I live that don't have much money such as myself. So I help who I can.

Years ago I had a ujm (universal Japanese motorcycle) and a buddy I worked with did to, a clean low mileage 97 Katana (this was like 2001) he rode it to work to show me one day. Another guy we worked with rode it around the parking lot n ditched it into a curb. Totaled it. Dude didn't have the money to pay, and the bike wasn't insured. I don't borrow or lend bikes, just cuz.

I don't even accept offers of "take my bike around the block",,,I don't want to take responsibility for someone else's ride

I'm pretty free with loaning the slow bikes. Only issue I've had the dude paid for the damages, so all good.

I've now managed to get both my wife and myself a spare scooter. One reason is so that we both have spares. But another reason is to encourage other couples to go riding with us. In other words, I'm actually preparing to lend out scoots in spite of that dire scenario I painted above. One difference is that I'll be right there keeping an eye on these people.
So I printed up some little slips of paper with our phone numbers and a message that boils down to. "Join us. We've got spare scooters. We'll take a gentle ride for an hour or so and grab a burger". The real thing was hardly any more wordy than that. I must have passed 20 or so out at work.
Only the people who know me pretty well, plus one or two others, understood the invitation for just what it was. All the rest looked at me kinda sidelong. I could see that they were trying to figure out, "What's the catch?"
I'm thinking that I might have to add a line saying, "We're not going to try to charge you for this. We're just trying to share".
What a suspicious, suspicious world.
And I wouldn't be surprise, either, if management sets me down and says, "What are you doing? Stop it! Someone will try to hold us liable".
And they probably won't be wrong for fearing such a thing.
What a rotten, rotten world. (Not really. It just seems that way sometimes.)

Might have to make some liability waivers saying you wont be held responsible for their actions or damage they cause using your scooters. Just understand that if it were a mechanical fault it would be you paying for it unless you could find a wording that says otherwise...
