Hello all!
I currently have a 2015 Lance Cabo 50cc Scooter that I purchased from MopedU (university sponsored moped shop) that has been causing some significant issues the past couple of months. I live in Iowa and it can get down to -10F here during the winter and I'll still ride my moped no matter the temperature (parking is an ungodly amount of money and I have a lot of winter gear). I do keep it in the garage however, so it is protected somewhat from the cold conditions.
After about 2 years of riding (~3500 mi on it) I noticed that it had trouble starting and idling so I took it in to MopedU where they attempted to fix the problem. Long story short, I took it in 3 times within 2 months to have them clean out the carb/replace the carb and do a valve adjustment every single time and got sick of paying for it. They offered no explanation and couldn't figure out the problem themselves, so I decided to do the adjustments myself. Note that I know relatively little about mopeds, but I've done quite a bit of searching and studying about some of the maintenance procedures that are done.
Currently, the moped starts up (sometimes has a little backfire at start) and idles for about 10 seconds then dies. If I give it gas it will continue to run for a bit and then eventually will cut out. If I'm adamant about riding, I can get to where I need to be by constantly revving the throttle at stoplights (so it won't die) but sometimes even that doesn't work. I've replaced the fuel filter, petcock, and fuel line. I've cleaned out and soaked the carb multiple times, which seems to help a little, but not much. Lastly, I've adjusted the valves to .004" and after that the moped ran SO much better, but tended to idle just a little low depending on the temperature outside. In colder temps it would idle low (~1000rpm), and in warmer temps it would idle normal (~2000rpm).
So now I'm in what seems to be a never ending valve adjustment cycle. I'll adjust the valves, moped will start up and idle fine for about 2 weeks and then the symptoms will occur again, requiring a valve adjustment. Once I adjust the valves again, everything seems to run fine until about 2 weeks later. Can anyone offer some insight?
