Hello all,
As the title says..I noticed my lights aren't coming on anymore until I start the Scooter. It is a 2015 VIP with completely stock wiring. The other morning I was riding it to work when I came to a stoplight and noticed an electrical smell coming from the fan area. I know the 'alternator' system is on the back side of that. But everything kept working. I thought my battery was dying. Electric start still fires it right up like normal and my lights are just as bright at night as they ever have been.
Ideas?

I believe that is the correct operation for the headlight. It does not light with battery power so the scoot has to be running for the headlight to illuminate. Others will let you know if I am incorrect.

Well it has always come on as soon as you turn the key before you actually start it. The wiring has never been touched. I though it was strange that it did that and bad for the system. I like it the way it is now I just want to make sure I didn't fry something somehow because I did smell electrical heat not a full blown burn cause you know that is a very distinct smell! Since the lights aren't coming on I haven't had that smell again! I would like to keep it the way it is now. Hell I'd like to convert the head light's to only come on when I turn them on and prevent that draw on the electrical system. That may allow the stator and rectifier to last longer...possibly. I notice you had a TAOTAO ATM, did your lights not come on before it was started? This has me perplexed now!

I have had three scoots and not one of them illuminated the headlight until the engine was running.

Iwannascoot is correct. By design, the headlight only works with AC power. That is to save the battery from becoming drained if the key is switched on. There's no telling how yours became so that the headlight came on with battery power but the burning smell you just experienced is likely the finality of that "problem". It seems to have "fixed" itself It's not impossible that whoever assembled your scooter to begin with cross wired it. I suspect the burning smell was maybe ONE of the coils on your stator. They can operate independently of one another depending on the stator. I would remove the flywheel and inspect it because it could leave you stranded down the road (no pun intended). I would also open the front and examine the wiring up front for the regulator, hheadlight and ignition switch.

It has to be possible that the assembler messed it up I suppose that is the only logical answer! I bought it from the original owner, whom I know personally. I know he didn't do anything to it, hell he only put 240 miles on it all he did was change the oil and gear lube. I changed that again as soon as I bought it. Electrical is not my forte, I am decent with it but I'm not sure what I will be looking for on the stator other than a burnt connection. After that I don't know what to do with it. I have had the front apart when I was trying to figure out why my tach isn't working. So far I have not found anything suspicious up there. All the wires and plugs look solid and no discoloration on the wire insulation. I have yet to find a wiring diagram to help me figure out the tach. I comes on at startup, sits at 1000rpm and won't climb it just wiggles a little...
I really appreciate your help so keep it coming!

Some scoots do have lights that come on with just the key on, but it's not common at all with these small Chinese scooters. If any other electrical components changed operation, I'd check the battery, fuse, and grounds. Grounds are never a bad thing to check anyway. So many weird things can happen with poor ground connections.

This one was solid from day one. The shop that assembles them is not just a dealership it is a small shop with a good reputation that does all kinds of repairs and mods. There was not one nut or bolt that wasn't tight, nothing stripped and all the wires were secured with ties. The fuel and vacumn lines are even good quality hose. When I went to change the rollers I noticed it had a bando belt, which is all they sell at this shop. The guy I bought it from said he saw it come out of the crate and the guys were checking the bolts on the brake caliper. They told him they have had them come in messed up.

Some scoots have some small running lights that come on with the key inside the headlight assemblies.
