I saw an ad for a gps device TrackerR. One could attach the unit under a body panel. However I don't know the range.

If the TrackR is what you're talking about, it sounds like it has to be within bluetooth range, or within bluetooth range of another TrackR user. From a quick google, that's about 300ft. Sounds like it's awesome for keeping track of where you left your keys, not so sure about using it to hunt down a scooter unless a lot of people use it. A large yard/lot could make it so that no one could be within range without trespassing so it would be really unlikely that it popped up in that case I'd think. Here's a quote from their site : " Lost something? TrackR’s crowd-sourced network will help you find it. When another TrackR user is within Bluetooth range of your lost item, you will receive a location update." get-trackr.io/index-02/

I've heard of people just hiding a cheap cell phone in the plastics. Anything that will give you location without wifi or other connectivity is going to need to be added to a cellular plan anyway.

I've heard of people just hiding a cheap cell phone in the plastics. Thats interesting. You could have a charging circuit on board to keep it charged too. Still I am wondering if it would have to be a smart phone. A cheap smart phone?

I'd check with the provider. Even flip phones have location services. As long as the provider's "find my phone" operates with it.
I've thought about it but always have other things to spend money on.
I figure the place to hide it would be between the taillight and the gas tank. Leg shields always get ripped off, I've seen buckets snatched out, usually thieves leave the rear cowl intact though.
Other reason a tracker on my scooter would be bad is if it did get stolen and I figured out where it was i may not call the police.
