I know there are a lot of cheap "performance" exhausts out there for these 4t engines, but are there any that truly offer performance gains? Or will i have to fab something up like many others here do?

I'd expect that most of the aftermarket 4T exhausts will perform about the same. They seem to have just a couple of key points. A larger header and a straight through muffler. Both are likely overkill for most setups, but probably could improve power vs stock on modified engines. On a stock engine, I'd guess an unrestricted stock exhaust would do about as well as anything. You can start reading up on tuned lengths, tubing diameters, and so on and run a bunch of numbers to try and figure out what will work best and build it yourself. The problem is, it's a lot of effort for what is probably going to be a minimal gain. Getting waves timed just right should help with scavenging/cylinder filling, but it's not going to be anything like a two-stroke where it's compared to supercharging.
I think a lot of the cheap pipes can be fine, but you should make sure they are well supported. Many don't have a good bracket setup and crack because of that.
