A month or two ago I posted a thread where I had to change a broken clutch shoe in my 50mm BBC scoot. Problem was....it developed a nasty vibration. I knew it HAD to be the shoes because that's all that changed. So..yesterday I removed the clutch, put it on a balancer and sure enough....it had a significant heavy side. So I took it apart and weighed the brake shoes individually and they were 122,122,132 <yikes!> So after balancing the shoes and reinstalling them.....WOW...sooo Smoooooooth. They're all at 121grams now. (This has the similar effect of using slightly lighter rollers/sliders...or stronger clutch springs) At wide open throttle and max speed it's never been this smooth. Anyone else balanced their CLUTCH ?

I'll have to try that. I don't have vibration, but it will help with performance to balance the clutch.
Your picture shows how you did it with a drill. Looks easy to do. I also have a scale that measures grams to the 1/10.

Wow ten grams difference! thats huge for something so small and rotates so fast. Ill have to weigh my clutch shoes when I replace my old one.

Anyone else balanced their CLUTCH ? Sure do! Started doing it a few years ago because I noticed the same problems you are having. My issue with clutches nowdays is inconsistent springs (cheap) and heat fade. I wish we had wet clutches.

There is a YouTube video on doing this and the guy claimed a more positive clutch engagement and smoother performance. It made me think it would be a good thing to do to mine. After I get it.

you would think a very small margin of weight differences would be checked for on the production floor. then again I could imagine how easy it would be to just toss a part in the box thinking it had already been checked, or maybe the qc in that factory just sucks

I don't think Chinese manufacturing firms have a QC! My Dongfang from the factory had 3 168mm engine studs and 1 176mm engine stud! That caused me a problem when I installed my BBK.

I do think this was my fault tho. Reason being is that I took shoes from different clutch assemblies (thinking) they would be the same. But that brings in a whole different line of thought.....as to why a Chinese OEM would use 10 gram heavier clutch shoes than another. Maybe stronger springs were used? At the end of the day, the effect would be that lighter shoes would have to be spun faster given the same spring tension. Heavier shoes "should" engage earlier it would seem. BUT...if you did somehow get a clutch that had shoes more than even one gram out of balance from the others, that could def set up some mystery vibrations. Ask me how I know :-)
