I have a 2009 Kymco People 150. It had been my bike for a while. But my wife inherited it from me when I moved on to a different bike.
So she's been riding it and it's been doing fine. I haven't had to go and rescue her yet. But she said to me last week that there's a bit of a 'jerk' in the driveline. So I took it for a few spins and found that she is right. A 'shudder' does run through the power train on takeoff from a dead stop. It happens after the 'friction point' but before the clutch is fully engaged.
The clutch itself is my prime suspect, of course. But I took the CVT cover off in order to have a look for anything that might be obviously wrong. Not having an impact driver........yet.......I didn't really plan on any kind of disassembly. This was merely a
look-see. The bike is closing in on 10,000 kilometers. So a worn belt struck me as a possibility too, for instance.
Anyway the inside looked quite good. Belt was in fine shape. There was dirt in there. But less than I might have guessed. Variator and actuator both looked pretty clean and in good shape. No damage visible to the eye anywhere.
And there on the clutch bell, facing me, were stamped the words:
Kymco
GY6
So now I'm wondering.......is that a GY6 engine in this bike? I've looked at the engine before. But it didn't occur to me to compare and see if that's exactly the same engine. Is it possible that this is a GY6 engine built by Kymco, or their suppliers, to Kymco specs?
I wouldn't even expect all parts to interchange. But I'll probably be replacing that clutch.
Is it possible that I could put on a GY6 clutch that I might buy from one of our vendors? It would be a pleasure to avoid dealing with a Kymco dealer.
FWIW my clutch does look just like the clutch in Brent's video. But I'd expect them to all look pretty much alike and, once again, it didn't occur to me to look for something literally identical.
