I read my kymco super 8 50r is a dc scooter, the electric blinkers lights ect work when engine is off so that confirms it needs a DC cdi right? Any good ones I should try and hunt down, ive been searching around 2 or 3 times and all ive come up with are black box no names on ebay for 10 bucks. KYMCO forums say my scooter ships with a unrestricted cdi in it so Im not getting a good one hoping to gain 10 mph but Im replacing a lot of the parts on this scooter with quality performance parts anyways and at these prices whats another 60 bucks or so especially if it adds some reliability. Anyway brand or model even a link of something that would be an upgrade and work, thanks.

I wouldn't say they're complicated. If you buy one off ebay it'll probably work fine. But no, all those things can work and it can still have an AC CDI. I just look at them. The DC CDI's are larger than the AC CDI's. It's hard to confuse them. Like this.....see what I mean, Vern? But I wouldn't count on gaining 10 mph by changing the CDI......(sad)

Well that's interesting, the AC options are numerous so it would be a nice surprise if it turned out AC.

But I wouldn't count on gaining 10 mph by changing the CDI......(sad) I wouldn't count on gaining any MPH on a stock bike by changing the CDI. Unless the original CDI went bad and your bike doesn't run... Matt

Unless the original CDI went bad and your bike doesn't run... Matt Im not expecting any noticable gains from upgrading cdi, really just want to replace anything cheap thats as critical as that. KYMCO said the super 8 ships with no rev limiter anyways so this is just for reliability. My scooters restriction is in the variator boss, it has a ridge on it preventing the variator from closing enough to make the higher gear ratios.

Actually this is very feasible with a Kymco ZX50 and derestricting the stock CDI by joining the light green and dark green wires together.
Bone stock ZX50(restricted) with my fat ass on the seat averaged 35-38 mph. Derestricted it averaged 46-48 mph, 50 mph down hill.
10 mph gains may not be obtainable, but on a 2 stroke you can come close and/or make it happen.
My experience with 4 strokes and unrestricted CDI's. the gains are much less than 10 MPH, realistically you are looking at 5-7 at best.
Now with that said, unless you are running a tach I wouldn't run a derestricted CDI unless you can keep an eye on your engine revs. Over revving a stock 4 stroke will eventually end with unwanted results.

Found one finally, I am installing a tach for sure, might do the vapor unit but at the very least ill throw a tach on there. If I see any improvements in speed or accel Ill be really happy, kymco says they ship with unrestricted cdi's in them, Im replacing it with a higher quality one just for better reliability and piece of mind. Gains of any kind will be icing on the cake. www.scootertronics.com/kymconaraku.html

Just double check what your CDI looks like. Some Kymco 4 stroke scooters use different style plugs. Perfect example, the service manual for my Kymco say's I have this style CDI In reality its actually this style.
