Hopefully not a dumb question. But i have no idea what reeds purpose are, coming from 4t recently. What exactly do they do and What are the benefits , if any, on a stock engine to upgrading them?

Reeds do the same job as valves in a 4 stroke, but are not mechanically operated.
This guy does a good job explaining.

You can think of reeds as INTAKE valves in a 2 stroke engine.

The bottom line for reeds valve operation is that have the correct stiffness/flexibility for the engines current tuning...and that they seal properly in the closed position, thus allowing the intake charge gas and exhaust charge gas to flow efficiently.
If they are cracked or leak, it leads to improper combustion.
