Hey scooter bandits!! Just bought an '09 Zuma 2 smoke with 150 miles on it for $600!!!! I'm stoked. Did the throttle de-restriction after reading up here but have a few questions: I want to run around 50mph. It's an around town scoot but I want the top end sometimes. I'm impressed with the powerband on the stock Zuma with de-restriction. Feels nice! 70cc kits: .Athena has a single piston ring Polini and Malossi both have 2 piston rings I would think 2 is better than one for sealing right? Exhausts: I want a quiet one with better flow. Suggestions? Thanks!!

Welcome. Glad to have another 2 smoker here. You seem to be on the right track. But forget 50 your gonna end up wanting 70 eventually so just start out aspiring for 70 A nice mid race jug, c16 pipe, malossi over range, a 21mm carb, and lastly some gears, then you'll be ripping streets up in no time.

Great price on that Zuma. But.... you're going to have to change your screen name (a Zuma is a Yamaha).

Welcome to the forum! Get the Athena, unless you are looking at the Polini Corsa. I'd still take the Athena over the Polini myself, but I've tuned a lot of 2 strokes, so aluminum cylinders don't scare me. The Polini would be a bit more forgiving. If you want quiet and 50 mph then you'll need up gears and an over range. You can get the Malossi over range at scooterpartsco.com for around 220 dollars the last time I checked. I really couldn't suggest a quiet pipe. Maybe turbotype1 has a good suggestion?

Yup. I'm a big fan of the corsa, and I catch flack for it but it's ok. I'm a newb at scooters so a forgiving cast iron jug suits me well. It's really apples vs oranges when comparing different bbk kits.

Yeah, I've had many scoots in the past but never a 2 smoke so it's new. I went through about 10 Honda Ruckus' hence the username. Still have a Ruckus, Kymco Agility, and now the Zuma!!
Can you elaborate on the iron versus the aluminum? I would assume the aluminum cools better but will scar easier? what other advantages/disadvantages of each? And what about single rings and double rings? Don't want a race scoot. Just a stealthy, relatively quiet, one that can pull 50mph.... i like the Gianelli extra v2 exhaust because it is only slightly louder than stock and actually looks pretty nice. I am leaning towards the Gianelli and the Malossi 70cc kit. ive ordered from Environmoto and Composimo in the past. Great service.

No such thing as a stealthy 2t. Tuned pipes are kind of LOUD.

The aluminum will cool better for sure and if tuned right will last a very long time. I've got a buddy that probably put 20k on an Athena. 50 miles a day, 5 days a week for 2 years and whatever he rode on the weekends. It was his daily driver. The cast iron cylinder can be honed if you mess it up, which would be the only reason I would ever buy one. But, I had an aluminum cylinder seize, was all scored up and I sanded it down and another guy here uses it on a daily bases. So... yeah. So you are thinking about a tuned pipe, I was thinking that you wanted something similar to stock. The Gianelli is a decent pipe from what I've heard. Couldn't vouch for it though. But with a tuned pipe, a 70 and some gears you can do 50. I wouldn't get the iron Malossi. Over priced as far as I'm concerned. Get the Polini Corsa if you're dead set on an iron cylinder.

Glad to see you signed up. Like I said on YouTube, lots of 2T nuts here. I've always ran iron BBKs. My "emergency backup" engine has a Taiwan 70cc on it (from Autotech355) and a cheap Naraku crank. MRP or Leo Vince ZX exhaust, 21mm DellOrto (19mm would be plenty really), Malossi OR kit, 10.13:1 gearing, and it carries my ~300lb to 50-55MPH reliably. Not a fast setup, but it has been good for riding. I've only ever owned 1 aluminum kit. An Airsal T6. It put a hole in the piston while my father was riding it down a hill and the cylinder ended up ruined as well. Never tried another aluminum jug since. Lots of people run them with great success though, and it's not like I haven't ruined more than my share of iron kits too.

I'm glad I signed up as well! I've watched your videos for YEARS and enjoy them. Easily the best, highest quality, and most informative ones out there. I began with the Ruckus and VERY quickly realized I LOVE scooters. I have a motorcycle license but preferred to run the hell out of my scooters because they were FREE to ride.....then the state stepped in and messed it up a bit. I sold all of my scooters (2 of the Ruckus' sold for $5,000 each!!!!) but missed my scooters. i decided to get back into my other obsession....air cooled vw's. I bought a '67 bug from California and have been working on it for 2 years. But I missed my scooters. So I started up my scooter collection again. Hahaha Anyway, I am very knowledgeable with the 4 strokes and am very interested in the 2 smokes now. I am fascinated with the power and compared to my other scooters. It isn't as fast (yet) but the power and is sweet. I need to research the bbk some more before I purchase. Had a polini in the past and was very nice. I would definitely want better cooling as the bbk is much harder on that little motor and I want proper cooling. hmmmmm. any thoughts on the single rings as opposed to the double rings? Wonder why they do that? Maybe the single is for aluminum jugs and the dual is for iron? I'll have to explore it further. Thank you for your help guys!!!

Single ring kits are great for racing and reduce friction. They don't seal as well and need more frequent maintenance. Dual ring kits are better for street beaters IMO, but that's not to say you can't use a single ring kit. They're generally for the kits beyond typical street/sport levels.

Sooooo..... Athena-single ring and aluminum jug. Polini-dual rings and aluminum jug. Malossi-dual rings and cast iron jug.
Hmmmmm.....at this point I'm thinking the polini or malossi.
