My TaoTao 49cc Bendix isn’t always spinning out and engaging the CVT ring gear very reliably anymore. My gel-cell battery voltage is OK and the battery lives on a battery tender when my scoot is in the garage. The scooter starts easily as soon as the Bendix gear slings out and engages the ring gear
Is it something that can be taken apart, cleaned, lubed and reassembled or do I just buy a new one?
Thanks, Greg
maybe I should have posted this in the troubleshooting area?

You don't need to take it apart but spray it full with wd-40 inside then shake it and twist it, maybe it will loosen up a bit and some dirt will come out of it. This works sometimes and sometimes not.

Yes, you can easyly take apart at least the smaller end tip of Bendix. it has piss poor "lockring" at it (eye visible).
just be carefull with the lock ring, not to over open it ruin it. it can be thow replaced, and diy replaced.
the centrifugal mass part isnt very serviceable (fully dismantle able), but it can be fully cleaned in solvent and re-lubricated.
from other hand New Bendix from China costs like 5pounds or 5usd, under tenner.
but if handy, why not do a piss simple diy fix and basic maintenance for it. highly recommended.
These Bendix need regular clean/re-lubricate Maintenance. it last very very long when properly maintained serviced. lotsa is also down to how using the e-starter/engine specs, having an effect into how long Bendix Teeths last.....

gel-cell battery voltage is OK Test battery cranking volts. Try using battery jumper cables to start from another engine-off vehicle.

I saw that "lock ring" in a close up of a Glixal Bendix on Amazon. I had expected to see an "e" ring but instead there was this carefully formed piece of wire. My nearly new scoot has extremely low milage and has never been in a dirty environment. So I expect it was lubed incorrectly or maybe not at all? No odd noises tho. I want to make two more rides then I'll pop it out of there and check, clean and relube it. Maybe some of that super slick Moly type grease will let the driving gear slide out and engage more reliably. I've got to pull the CVT cover before winter sets in anyway so I can see how far out the belt is riding with the throttle screwed to the max. Maybe I'll want to change roller weights. But that's another subject. It's good to know this can be at least checked out a bit and serviced to some degree. No good info for this either here or on YouTube. Thanks, Greg

I’ve copied your photo so I know what to expect once inside the bendix, good visual aid.
And the tip on the phony oillite bearing is a bit eye opening. I think I remember a gripe about that from before regarding a variator assy.
Thanks guys, nice help. Greg

I'm also having an issue with the starter spinning without engaging. I went ahead and purchased a new bendix off amazon due to low cost.
Does anyone have a video of bendix replacement, or thread describing it? Or is it just so easy pop the old one out put the new one in, that you don't really need instructions?

its too easy to install/replace. but you may look visual youtube vids still.
just grease the bendix parts properly (look the photo on this topic) . Spray vaseline grease is ok if you dont Dare to take new Bendix apart for PROPER greasing.
Grease also the "bearing" at engine casing for both Bendix END's.
would be a "must to do" also dismantle clean/grease the e-starter motor, as often they are left bone dry no grease on "bearing".
Sounds like reading a W.S.M wont hurt you, so Google for FREE W.S.M such as "qingqi_qm50qt6_servicemanual.pdf"
it will help you along the scooter Journey's. many other free pdf's also exist ^^ but that is golden...

check all your battery cables and grounds too, I just got my new starter and the cables are a complete joke, all the way from the battery to the starter, I'm making new ones, most starter motors are series motors, the more current they can draw, the higher the torque they can put out, these cables from the battery to the starter should beat least 6 gauge, it's a high DC current traveling a long distance, the lower wire resistance, the better

I will check the battery voltage when it warms up to 40 or so but even at 20F the Bendix still seems to snap right out and back with no drag. I was unable to pop the little ring off to get a peek inside the Bendix. But checking for slightly low battery voltage does see like a good test to make. So I'll do that as soon as possible.
Thanks, Greg
