The power gain, if any, is not worth the obnoxious factor.

The power gain, if any, is not worth the obnoxious factor. my original one had a converter muffler and it clogged up , so for 15 bucks and some fabricating and welding it works great, it changes the entire character of the scooter,

A straight pipe will work, but don't make it really short. Don't want it to be able to let cold air into the engine plus it's better to get it back behind you so it's not ruining your hearing. Probably won't see much difference in stock, straight, or aftermarket as far as performance. Just be ready for a lot of noise. I think it's personal preference and/or circumstantial to a large degree. I'd rather not be ultra-loud on something topping out at 35-40MPH... or even faster. Some love it. I'd say avoid the really loud exhaust setups if you have neighbors that will dislike it... or enjoy sleeping in instead of waking up when you leave for work at 5AM, or if local law enforcement is known to be strict on that sort of thing.

Late, but.
If you want to attract the attention of law enforcement, go ahead and pull out the hack saw.
If you want to annoy your neighbors so they call the previously mentioned every time you ride by, pull out the hack saw and go to town.
If you want to have to shout LOUDLY to anyone near, ditto on the hack saw.
It won't help, but go ahead and get the sawzall out, but use a metal cutting blade as the exhaust will ruin a woodcutting blade.
There are reasons to modify the exhaust, but performance by removing the muffler is not one that will make much if any difference. OTOH, if there are chunks and blobs of filler/sound deadener/fiberglass/??? flopping around inside clogging the pipe, cleaning them up, removing as needed, etc are good steps. I'd suggest putting it back together after for two reasons: appearance and changing the 'tone' of the exhaust note. tom
