Hello forum, in November 2017 I got a 2013 BMS Tuscan 49cc scooter from an older fellow who had bought it from the manufacturer in 2013. The scooter is like new, it only had 180 miles on it when I got it. He said he only used it to drive to the pool in his community occasionally in the summers. So this scooter has spent most of its life sitting in his garage. So the problem is this scooter is very hard to start for the first time each day, it literally takes an hour of trying to electric start it, kick start it, and letting it sit. Once its running its also hard to keep running. When idling it will idle fine and then idle down and knock off. It also cuts off when stopping while driving it. But with WOT it runs fine. Ive got 530 miles on it now. So I took out the carb and took the bowl off and the jets were clean. I unsealed the mixture screw and I was able to get it idling a little better but not really. I think it might be the enricher? A new carb/enricher with upgraded jets is only $25 on Amazon. Does this sound like the problem here? Should I make the replacement?

I’d run it through a full maintainace cycle. Change all the fluids, clean the carb, change the filters, change the oil, change the gear oil, replace the lines, clean the tank.
No telling what gunk got built up in there

in the mean time, buy also a starting fluid until you finish the full maintenance cycle.

Thanks! Ive changed the oil, the air filter is clean and the fuel filter looks good I can see thru it and see the gas. Ive put gas in it 3 or 4 times since I got it. The bottom of the carb was clean I didnt take the top off. Its had this problem since I got it. Any more ideas on the likely cause of it?

Ill try to adjust the valves sometime this week, the metal tag on the scooter says they are gapped .06-.08?? Also I forgot to mention the colder it is outside the worse the problem is. If its under 60F, it pretty much won't start at all.

Ok so I went to adjust the valve clearance, set the intake side fine, around .0025" -.003"(It was a close already). The exhaust side however had no clearance at all, the rocker arm was tight. So when I loosen the nut the tappet stays with it tightly. I take it all the way out and it appears the nut is crossed. I turned the nut by brute force and of course it mangled up the threads on the tappet. I ordered a new tappet and nut, it'll be here in 2-4 days. I really hope this fixes my problems. Does the exhaust clearance issue sound like a likely culprit for the symptoms my scooters been having??

don't buy a 25 dollar carb, spend the 50-60 bucks on a genuine Keihin or other quality brand, try to avoid anything with glixal on it. have you checked your ignition system? spark plug? is the fuel petcock working? if it had ethanol fuel and sat, it might have ruined it. if it had ethanol and a cheap carb, the needle diaphragm for the main jet possibly has turned to goo, or has holes in it. did you drain and flush the tank? if that crap gas sat that long, it went into phase separation, which means it separated into gas, water, and ethanol, also it sitting in your carb will just ruin everything in contact with it.

Does the exhaust valve clearance affect engine startup?
Yes, it can make starting very difficult. It would also make re-starting when hot difficult.
Valve clearance can be too small, making the valve leak, as it must close and seat to retain compression. As the engine heats, the valve clearance would tend to decrease as the parts expand, making too-tight valves leak more when hot. tom

UPDATE: Hey guys, it seems that was the problem. I got the new screw for the exhaust side and set it at .003". Put it back together and it has fired right up ever since. I played with the idle a little and now its starting and running MUCH better. Thank you guys!
