(Not that I had gotten very far before TR went TU, but here’s my build thread)
Picked up a 2002 Met II that was not in great shape. Poor little thing had been sitting out on the side of the driveway, for who knows how long. Lots of our spider friends had taken up residence. But it was cheap, and my daughters said I should build a scooter for Mommy. OK, sure. Why not?
Took it home, and stripped it down and started cleaning it up -
There were some issues with some of the parts. The clutch had some metal slag in it. Who knows where that came from -
Along the way, I parted out a Kymco Sento 50. Wouldn’t you know, the forks are the same length and diameter as the Met! Free disk brakes (I wonder if the Ruckus Lowering Springs would drop in? Guess I ask Brandon at SSS if he'll put some calipers to them)
Parts buying has been the easiest thing to find time for. Polini variator, intake coupler, bolts, tubing, ect…MNNTHBX had a sale, and I picked up their Met/Ruck stem. Just something to be a bit different.
Found a great deal on a used Yoshi! (pic from the CL ad)
As part of doing the Ruck swingarm conversion, I bought a brand new set of Met gears, and figured as long as I was in there, might as well change out the seal and bearing. Kind of a pain in the butt, until I got some guidance from my friend who’s a scooter mechanic. A little heat gun action applied to the case, a few taps using a socket as a guide, and it popped out fairly easy. Getting them back in was a bit more nerve-wracking, but it all came out nice.
Also had some time to do a bit of mocking up:
Hung the engine. Stock Forsa shock from a Buddy for now.
Straight bars on a clamp I had in a parts bin, and a mix of controls from the Kymco Sento, and a Lance Cabo 125 that I parted out (I get a lot of part outs). If I like how it works out, I’ll drop the cash on a different bar clamp.
That’s where we are now kids! Going to focus on GET-ting the gears sealed, CVT buttoned up, and carb and air dialed in. Then, if all goes well, fire this baby up!
Big thanks to Happypancake! for helping me work thru some questions (I’ll have more!). And to the other TR folks, and all the awesome 49ccscoot peeps here for their build knowledge and inspiration so far. Also to my wife for putting up with my new hobby!
