Hey guys - I’ve had a new Taotao Zummer for about a month now and put around 50 miles on it. It is running well but tonight when I went to start it, the electric starter won’t turn over. It cranks a bit but then just sounds weak. It kick starts fine on the first kick. Could the Chinese battery have gone bad that quickly? Anyone have recommended replacements for the Taotao scooters (particularly if there is a good one available on Amazon)? The battery currently in it is a dtx5l-bs. Thanks so much!

With only 50 miles in a month I would check the fluid level if it’s not a sealed battery and put it on a charger My first thoughts would be 2 things one it’s nit being ridden long enough to charge the battery Two what is the weather like these small batteries have very few cranking amps and can have issues even at 40 deg

I bought an optimate 6 as a charger and I replaced the chinese battery by a Batterie moto YTZ7S / GTZ7S-BS 12V 6Ah. this new battery works fine as long as the temperature is not below zero.

When you don't ride a decent distance every day the battery will discharge. Keep the battery on a 1A trickle charger.

I left it on a charger overnight and it still isn’t starting. I did also swap the stock CDI this weekend for a “performance” blue CDI. Could the CDI be impacting the electric starter but not the Kickstarter?

Aftermarket CDIs often advance timing a lot at cranking/idle speeds compared to stock CDIs. That makes starting harder. Unless it's a DC CDI with some fault though, it shouldn't be draining your battery.

Unless it's a DC CDI with some fault though, it shouldn't be draining your battery. Could it cause general starting issues though? I'm gonna throw the stock back on tonight and see if it makes a difference. The Zummer is challenging since I need to take a bunch of panels off to get to anything internal!

It can cause hard starting with advanced ignition timing. That's why I just do a pickup mod to get a few degrees of advance all around. The 2 CDI I tried on my TaoTao had pretty much full advance at idle instead of a curve. All detailed in the vid below.

Thanks tocoo! Do you have a Zummer? That battery seems physically bigger but I do realize the battery compartment has some room to grow.

Thanks tocoo! Do you have a Zummer? That battery seems physically bigger but I do realize the battery compartment has some room to grow. I do not have the zummer. The charger works for any scooter, moto and car. For the battery, I took the original battery which was a YUASA and I saw the code YTX5L-BS on it. SO I google the generic code for batteries which is explained here www.yuasabatteries.com/pdfs/Yuasa_Specs_Apps_2015.pdfthen I search for the size of the battery I want, and the spec I want, which gave me the code YTZ7S of this new battery. Then I saw that YUASA sell this YTZ7S battery, but for 100 euros, which is too much for me. SO I chose a YTZ7S battery by some unknown brand for 35 euros and I maintain the health with the charger. When I received the new battery, I was stupid because I pressed too much the 4 tanks containing the acid after I put them upside-down to fill the new battery and one of the tank spilled on the ground. I was scared that my battery would not be as powerful as the specs but ti is still okay. After this, you must wait 30min and then drive for 30km or charge it.

I wanted to create a thread for this, but since we talk batteries, I would like to buy longer screws which attach the wires of the scooter to the battery. My situation is that the charger Optimate 6 comes with the usual pliers and the special wires which can be left on the battery and directly be connected to the charger I soon as I want to charge the battery. My problem is that the thickness of the original eyelet electrical wire of the scooter + the eyelet of this special wire of the charger makes it impossible to screw the screws to the battery : I cannot get the screws to catch the battery bolts, even though I see that they must be long enough. I can screw all I want and the botl does not get caught and secure the two wires to each born of the battery.

If you're sure the bolt is long enough, try putting a small flat screwdriver under the nut in the terminal and then trying to start the bolt. Some people take a small chunk of hose and put in under the nut and leave it there. Rubber or non-conductive hose only of course. Otherwise, you can hit the hardware store and see if you can match it up or just get your own nut and bolt and mod the nut to fit. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/477/homemade-battery-terminal-nuts

When you stack the two terminals and attempt to install the bolts, make sure the eyelets are arranged so the wires are not bumping into each other, making the stack thicker. If you splay the wire portion of the terminal, the eyelet portion will be able to stack a lot closer, making longer bolts much more likely to be optional. tom

So I had an issue like this, a few times on a few scoots. Always seemed to be a loose connection, either at a battery post or a starter relay post, or even the screw on the starter itself... ALSO it can be a loose ground somewhere. I would look at each one of those connections and see if any of them are loose, I mean it is a new scoot and things settle in.

is there any reason for the manufacturer to still use this system with nuts and bolts that everybody hates because they get lost so easily?
