I need some help. A while back i installed a motorcycle radio on my tao tao vip cy50. Everything has worked without any issue. Today i installed the high performance cdi and coil. After installing the bike ran okay, until i turned on radio. The bike still ran fine, but the speakers were skipping in and out. Turned the bike off, radio played fine. Changed the coil back to the stock coil, cranked bike and radio was fine. Why is my high performance coil causing my radio to skip in and out? Any help would be great.

Perhaps you're experiencing radio frequency interference (RFI) because the new coil doesn't use a resistor wire or plug cap. If they're both screw on wires, you could try swapping the old wire onto the new coil to see if you can use it then.

They do not seem to screw apart in anyway.

What is the brand/model of the coil or can you post a pic of it?

RFI can be lessened if you use a 'resistor' spark plug, or the 'cap' on the end of the coil wire with internal resistor. The RF (radio frequency) signals can overpower the signal the radio receives from the antenna, which it must amplify a bunch, and make the circuitry 'cut out' to prevent loud noises. It is also possible the radio is 'clipping' the signal because it is designed to throw away LOUD noises. The coil you installed likely has more RF noise, or a metal-cored plug wire(high voltage) lead. Sometimes adding a resistor-equipped spark plug 'cap' will lessen the interference. This is all a guess, but you can check quickly using an AM band transistor radio. With the engine running at idle, turn on the radio, and you'll likely hear a buzzing that overpowers the radio signal no matter what station you try to tune in. Likely worse with the 'performance' coil & wire. Make it strong enough and no radio will work nearby. tom

Hey everyone. I waa using a ngk c7hsa spark plug, changed it to a ngk cr7hsa and the rfi noise in my radio is gone. Thank you all for all the help.
