So I’m sure I’m missing something, but how are you supposed to mount a license plate on the back of a Taotao? None of the holes appear to line up??

Go to HomeDepot snd find some brackets and improvise. Had to on my ZX50 as the plate is longer then where the plate hole are on scooter.

Mine didn't line up either. I just used zip ties.

MD motorcycle tag didn't line up on my 150 either. I had some 1" wide by 1/8" thick aluminum around so I made a bracket from that. Drilled holes to match the plate and the scoot. Bolted to the scoot. The bolt heads stuck out from the bracket so spacers would need to be used on the tag bolts. I installed my bolts sorta backwards so they worked like studs for the tag to go over. Instead of spacers, I just used nuts to secure the bolts for the tags and that spaced out the tag so it didn't hit the bolts to secure the bracket to the scoot.

I have this new invention. It's called an electric drill. I can use it along with drill bits of various sizes to make holes in wood, and sheet metal, such as license plates. If I make the holes to line up with the bracket holes, I can bolt the plate directly onto the bracket. In the above picture, the holes would likely poke through the "4" and the rightmost "C". Wonder if scrappydog would be upset? Most plates are aluminum, so would not rust, even in the salt states. tom

I have this new invention. It's called an electric drill. I had a MD state trooper tell me 20 years ago that he could give me some kind of big fine for altering a license plate, even for silly stuff that doesn't change the number or legibility. Wouldn't matter in the case of the Scrappy tag. Realistically, I don't think you'd have an issue unless you got a real ball-buster that happened to notice. I've seen so many tags on pickups in horrible condition from being in front of trailer hitches that stayed that way for years. I probably just met an officer that was in a bad mood or just finished reading a code book. Regardless, I try to fit state issued tags without modifying them.

I cannot argue with that as 'someone' will find a way to issue a citation if they so desire. Scrappydog? Not so much. tom

The mount. Oak is easier to work than metal. My Tao-tao took several operations and an excessive # of washers to make it fit right without violating the original mounts' integrity. As it turns out it would have been far easier if the damn branches had been removed first.
