I had a problem with the Bendix not engaging. When the scooter was cold I had to press the starter button 3 or 4 times before the Bendix gear would engage. It worked flawlessly when the scooter was warm. The quick and easy solution was to replace the Bendix. This worked fine for a few weeks but now it has the same problem. The old Bendix looks like new. There are no burrs on the gear and no apparent problems. I think maybe its operation is just a little sticky. I want to take the old Bendix apart, clean and lube it and put it in stock for future use.
A couple of questions:
1, To take the Bendix apart, there is a piece of wire in a groove holding it together, Has anyone tried to replace this retaining wire with a “snap” ring?
2, What lube should be used?
TaoTao Zummer (50cc with 72cc BBK)
Thanks,
ScooterWes

I've never repaired one myself, so I'd like to know too if anyone has and what their procedures were.
I have relubed it up with just regular motor oil. Seemed to help, just spin it around to get it to soak in. Did the same thing with wax-based chain lube for a bicycle. No-no, the wax hold the pawls inside from catching.

In the 60's and lower it didn't spin out and catch the ring gear like it was supposed to do on the first crank. I took it off and played with it a bit but it always seemed to work as designed while I was playing with it. I never got the snap ring thing off either. Didn't want to loose an eye or the part but maybe some sort of snap ring pliers used the wrong way could separate the end of that ring enough to finish the job with a small screwdriver. Replacing it with a real snap ring might be a good idea for reassembly. I never pursued the problem It just wasn't a big enough deal to worry about at this time since I can't imagine it being any more free sliding that it is now. No other example available. Good luck or just blow it off, Greg
