For anyone who doubts the importance of frequent oil changes during the break in period of these GY6 engines, I changed this before I put any miles on it and just changed it again today at 50 miles. Look at this beautiful black sludge! Also I didn’t take any pictures but my Prima magnetic drain plug was covered in little metal shavings, so I’m calling that a worthwhile $13 upgrade!

Interesting, may need to look into a magnetic drain plug now while i’m already replacing some things

I use that kit too. Just make sure you keep your washer/gaskets from your old bolts.

The gear oil drain bolt has one on my GY6. It'll leak on me without it. I think the motor oil drain has one too, but I've left that one off and not had a problem.

I've chucked the old bolts before, washers still in them when installed the kit the first time. Found out the hard way they need to be there 🙃

Thanks for this thread... inspired me to change oil with under 100 miles on GY6 150. Ewww:

Was that the factory installed oil? Remember that if this is a new engine, or one that has new rings/piston/cylinder or similar, the rings won't seal their best for a while, and you likely will get more unburned contaminants for a wile, including carbon from partially burned fuel. The color should improve over time, and cause a lot less discoloration as the rings seat better. My sense is that your rings have not seated, or you are in a colder climate where the 'choke/enricher' is engaged for a longer percent of running time, or you make a lot of short trips. If so, you might want to consider changing the oil more often than is recommended. Otherwise, if things don't improve after 5-600 miles or so, and the oil gets black quickly, I'd want to check that the rings are working by doing a compression test. Or, if you are satisfied with the way it run, just keep changing oil more ofen. The color does NOT hurt anything. It is actually carbon particles, which can act as graphite, as used in lock cylinders for dry lubricant. Arco, Union 76, or Chevron or ??? at one time sold oil that looked exactly like that when you poured it into your engine. Memory as to the exact name is not there. So even the 'oil guys' saw no problem with it, FWIW. tom

^ no, i drained what oil was in the engine from the factory. The guy i got the kit from delivered it with a quart of BelRay mineral 10-40. That's what you're looking at after 100 miles on fresh engine. Couldn't find anyone that sells that oil locally, so ended up buying Royal Purple break-in engine oil. It's got zync to help the rings seal better. So, couple more thousand miles n then switch to something normal. That's the plan anyway.
