Hello to all from sunny North Carolina. I have a new project scooter that I need some help with. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted you all to have some basic information before I ask for your help. The scooter was built in January of 2009 and has only 539 miles on it. I bought it not running, and the PO says it has not run in several years. Here is where I am now. 1. carb was a mess. I have cleaned it three times now, and I believe everything is open now.I know carbs that have sat this long with fuel in them can be problematic, so I am open to suggestions. 2. Cranking compression is 120 psi. I would like higher, but I think for an engine with only 539 miles and dry rings, this is acceptable. I believe it should at least start with 120 psi. Yes? 3. I have tried a new spark plug, and the spark jumps the enlarged gap in my ignition tester, so I am calling ignition ok, at least for now. 4. I have drained and cleaned the fuel tank, put in fresh gas, and verified that the fuel flows into the bowl when the engine is cranking. 5. I have checked valve adjustment, and it is spot on. 6. I have tried starting fluid with no results. Any suggestions? New carb maybe? Further checks? Any and all help will be appreciated!

the carb may need rebuilt not just cleaned. also the cdi is a known issue on these bikes. buy a new one they aren't real expensive. make sure its a non rev limited one.

Thanks for the help! Have you run across a sheared or partially sheared flywheel key on a scoot? I saw a lot of them when I used to work on lawn mowers, but I haven't seen one on a scooter or a motorcycle.

Well, it wasn't the flywheel key. Timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and flywheel line up properly as well. Just thought I'd throw that out.

If it's been sitting a while, the petcock could have gone bad, not allowing fuel to flow to the carb.
Vacuum lines could have a tiny hole or crack, causing a vacuum leak.
Intake manifolds sometimes dry up and allow an air leak, as well as the gasket underneath can become faulty.
Put the timing mark to TDC, then pull the head cover and see if the cam holes line up to TDC also.
Good luck!

Follow this link to a description of the bad CDI. They are a known problem. My neighbor was having early symptoms and replaced his and it went away.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I get a healthy spark across both a spark plug and an extended gap ignition tester while cranking. Could the cdi still be a cause for the no start? The float bowl of the carb fills while cranking, and the petcock holds vacuum when I put a vacuum pump at the end of the vac line, so the line is not leaking vacuum, and the petcock is opening. I am leaning toward trying a new carb, but only because I am out of ideas!

If starter fluid doesn't do it then its probably not the carb, even a messed up carb will let the starter fluid through. My Velo had a carb that was beyond clogged it was so corroded and it still started with fluid. It may well be your CDI. Let me check with my neighbor and see if he still has his old one. It worked enough to start the scooter.
By the way from sunny Winston-Salem.

Wow, that is really kind of both of you! At this point I'd be glad to give it a try. Should I send you a message?

I don't know how far you are from Winston but you could bring it by and we can test it here and look over your problem.

That is a really kind offer, and I look forward to meeting you one day. Winston is about 3 hours away for me, so I'm going to do some more from here first. If you think the cdi is really a likely cause even though it is making spark whenever I test it, I will buy one. Can you recommend a good source for the cdi? Are there some I should avoid? Thanks again!

The best source is Scooterpartsco. This is the one I linked earlier CDI . It is possible to get the spark but it not run. I had Hyosung like that. My neighbor has no problem loaning you his just to see if that is it. His starts crapping out after about 20 minutes so you can at least start it. Message me your address and I'll get it out in the next few days.

I got the cdi today. Thanks for sending it! Unfortunately, no joy. The scoot made a good spark, just as it did with the old cdi, but still a no start, not even a pop. I also tried a new carb with the same result. This one really has me scratching my head now!
