It is an interesting question. First in my questioning mind is the notion that they are called "stoppers' these days. As my history goes back to a gleam in your mom's eye or beyond...
The part you refer to pete130, is actually a reed diaphragm radius plate, which, by definition means that it is designed to control the arc of the diaphragm as it opens.
The only issues I see, if not using it are this: First, the opening is controlled by vacuum, but at the reed, is not a linear measurement...more vacuum induced flex at the outer, (weaker) edges and lesser pull at the connected ends. (stressed end) To me that means OK control on opening and not so on closing...further, the weak point becomes the guide edge near the mounting point. Much quicker to fail than a "guided" reed valve.
I have seen 2 stroke diesels with this arrangement, but the reed was designed to pivot and not to flex.
Bottom line in my history...it's OK for an emergency, assuming tuning can be done....but avoid it by using a radius limiter.
Just so you know...we did reshape them on older Yamaha TZ's to be a bit flatter, as we found the need.

Boyeson Reeds usually come with a type of stopper its just a flat piece with 2 screw holes not like the OEM reed stoppers with the 2 or so metal stops you must use the stopper supplied or they will snap off at the screw as it don't put even pressure you do not want that take it apart Asap and put the one supplied in if the reed snaps it will go into the piston and a screw could fall out and sieze you bigger than hell. Boyeson are the only ones Ive seen that don't use the metal fingered stoppers like my bike has I bent mine out a little to let them open up more and they don't flutter but mine are metal, Reed flutter can happen by using a stopper or not its caused from using too thin of reeds for your engine and when this happens you must buy stiffer reeds.
