It rained today so no BBK install. I took it down to the store and just used the side kickstand. It fell over. I should have known it seemed to be standing too straight up for that side kickstand. So it fell and the right side brake lever is broken. Well, that's not a big deal. But then I try to start it and the kick-starter breaks. Then after taking a look at the fuel filter, it appears there may be rust in the gas tank. Are there some ultra strong kick-starters I can replace this one with? I supposed any brake lever will do. Perhaps I will get a set of fancy ones to match the fancy exhaust. XD But not sure about the rust colored whatever gathering in the fuel filter. I saw some information about fixing the rusty gas tank but saw something like "Step 6 – Pour Acid Inside" so i thought there may be some better ways. And if you know of any after market gas tank made from plastic that will bolt on, I would rather go that route. Thanks

All that sucks.
The filter doesnt look to bad to me? Are there chunks im not seeing? Gas usually has a "straw" color and thats what im seeing.
Have you pulled the gas cap and inspected with a flashlight?
As for cleaning the tank. The best stuff on the market is probably por-15. It requirea several steps of pouring chemicals in to clean the tank out. Might be better to get a new tank if theyre cheap.

Thanks No there aren't any chunks. It just looked rust colored compared to before. Originally, it was clear. I want to get a new gas tank but a plastic one. I find it hard to get reliable replacement parts. Just looking around for a decent kick-starter "Kick Start Gear Shaft Rebuild Kit Idel Gear" some have really bad reviews. If I did get a replacement metal tank, is there a way to stop it from getting rusty?

Have you looked at partsforscooters? Theyre a forum sponsor.
Yes, there are at least 2 ways.
one is to always keep the tank full, using only ethanol free gas.
The other is to treat your new tank with the same sealer you would treat an old tank.

I'm pretty new to all this so I could just be over-reacting.

Yeah i think its fine. I guarantee theres a million and one cars rolling with worse filters. Ive pulled a filter where chunky gooey stuff poured out the back.
Use a flashlight next time your tank is emptyish and see what the bottom looks like. And run your finger under the bottom lip of the tank. A little rust isnt a problem. The problem is when it gets crusty and chunks start falling.

It will take some time to fill the filter with chunks to the point it impedes fuel flow. IOW, it is doing its job. J.O.B. It will take a pretty long time to rust through a metal tank. Every factory tank I have seen is made of stamped sheet metal. If you live in a humid climate, (Imagine Viet Nam, Bangladesh, Delhi, Singapore, HK, etc in summer. Monsoon season, etc. HUMID!! ... and more !!! to add emphasis) you should realize the citizens there have it a lot worse than many others. ANd, they use the same tanks. IOW, don't waste more brain time commiserating with the FeO2. It will outlast you, perhaps. You can use a dental mirror or other, or perhaps a digital exam(digit==finger) of the underside of the top surface of the tank to know the condition. The underside of the top is the 'most exposed' of all because it is above the fuel level almost immediately after filling the tank. It would be the 'worst case', unless you have condensation, which would gather as pearls of water at the bottom of the tank. Worry about something else. tom

Cool.
I am on to jetting the new carb to go along with the BBK, exhaust, and air filter. I popped in a 98 main and 35 pilot. It looks like there's no rain tomorrow.
