hello guys, I need some help to find out if my CDI is restricted or not. MY scooter does 42mph (GPS tested) and 45 on the stock speedo. Now...I feel like there's more to give at top speed and I don't think it revs higher than 7k rpm. How can I tell? I tried taking off a wire of the CDI out like I saw on youtube but scooter wouldn't start after that so I had to reconnect the wire. Do y'all know which wire to disconnect ?

Are you running a stock 49cc bore and stock pipe?
How much more are you looking for? I have a feeling that it's not the CDI that is limiting you. If everything is "stock" it is more likely that the pipe and exhaust duration porting is what is the limiting factors.

42 out of a stock motor, your cdi isn’t restricted. Tune the cvt if you want some more. A pipe and cylinder will make you smile ear to ear

I built a CDI test rig a while back and did find a CPI unit that shut down at 8000 RPM every time..So,yes you could have a restricted CDI,but I gotta agree with the guys above too,,do some more careful tuning with the cylinder, pipe, carb and CVT...

2stroke scoots really start to breathe with a better exhaust xD and with a 70cc kit It will be a little flying machine ;D

It has only 300 miles on it. I was thinking to change the rollers and put sliders instead. Next step will be to add a 70cc kit but I’m not sure which one to pick. I’m trying to do it on the budget so I was looking up those kits on amazon for under $100. Are those ok or should I look somewhere else? And is it any way to modify the stock exhaust instead of buying a whole different exhaust? I’ve seen also some on amazon for like $90.

I know all those mods cost money so I’m trying to eliminate issues one by one and gain at least 5mph. How about the washer from behind the variator? If I remove that would make any difference?

I’m in no rush and I’m on the budget atm.

The one I have, the limiter is built inside,so replacement is the only option...

Where is the washer on the variator located? If its between the pulley faces on the drive boss definitely pull it, you will see a difference.

Also check for an exhaust restriction. It'll be a fender washer sort of thing either sandwiched in at the gasket or possibly tack welded into the header pipe.

iony, if you go Big Bore make sure you understand what you are getting into. You will have to up jet and retune your carburetor. If you go big bore I recommend you also get main jet Kit and a Cylinder Head Temp gage. It's really easy to soft seize your first big bore if you are unfamiliar with tuning.
However, as mentioned by a member, you can tune the CVT for now. Here in Hawaii I use the KELI variator because that's what the shops stock here on Oahu. It makes a big difference over the stock variator and it's a reasonable price here. It comes with ramp plate, guides, and a set of 6g rollers. The ramps are taller and longer, it also improves acceleration and top speed.

I dont think you will be able to squeeze allot more out of it than now.. The biggest restriction is in the exhaust. Atleast here in the netherlands it is. Variator limit (small plastic ring on the boss to limit travel) without this 60kmh Unrestricted exhaust 70/75kmh But these scoots are made fr europe so i dont know how they are imported in the usa. Probaly also restricted i guess.. Just get an expansion exhaust and i would say thats your best bang for the buck without doing too major stuff to the engine.

Any exhaust changes will probably require some carb adjustment. Hopefully you have a carb with a mixture screw that isn't glued in/blocked off in some way, and you'll need a small jet selection. I like to think of the exhaust in a 2 stroke as an extension of the combustion chamber, not simply a path to vent gasses. Changes there will need changes to air/fuel.
I would go with the cvt mods first and see where it ends up, remember, only change one thing at a time. The washer removal pinkscoot mentioned should give you a couple more mph at the top.
