I want to add simple temperature sensor to the engine and LCD next to the dash.
What do i mount sensor on the engine exactly for most accurate temperature reading?
What hardware did you use if you done it.

TrailTech make a Cylinder head temp sensor and dash cluster, not sure if thats any good for you

Get the trail tech gauge. They are a little more expensive but worth the extra cost. Be sure to get the correct ring that goes under your plug and an extension, that are made for motorcycles and where the spark plug is closer to the handlebars.

I have to think that there are two temps that matter: cylinder head (at spark plug); and oil (several placements possible). Instead of two gauges, anybody know one gauge that can be switched between the two sensors?

Koso has a gauge that will read 2 temperatures but I can't tell if it will do a ring to go under the spark plug. The CHT is really the best temperature to be reading. It will let you know if the cylinder is running to hot and you're in danger of seizing.

Awesome idea i never though about putting sensor over spark plug, that should be precise.
Would it also be precise if i put one instead of oil dipstick?
Or a hole in center of oil filter cap and gy6 radiator temp sensor

You want something like this. The 12mm is for a 4 stroke plug. You pull the crush washer off the plug and replace it with this ring. These are specific to the Trailtech gauge. I have a couple of Chinese gauges and they are not very good.

Its understandable consumer product is better quality and its plug and play, however price bites, that sensor and gauge come almost to $100
Plan is to put sensor in boiling water (100 degrees Celsius) and then use resistance adjuster to make gauge show 100 degrees.
P.S. Theoretically would oil show engine temperature pretty well also since it flows in the engine?

I can never remember the 4 stroke spark plug size. Thats what I had for a while. They are okay they just crap out over time.

My TaoTao 50 has a GY6motor and uses a 10mm plug. Koso has plug adapters for 10mm and 14mm.

katt, you may have difficulty making the CHT thermocouple work with the gauge. It depends on the voltage needed, etc. Some thermocouples develop voltage based on temperature. I think the CHT varies resistance based on temperature. The coolant sensor is designed to be immersed in coolant OR taped to the upper radiator hose and wrapped for insulation. The range is cold to just over 110F, which is a hot day in Death Valley, NOT the temp of a cylinder head. You may find it won't do what you want. You will find out, I'm sure. tom

I am also looking for an inexpensive way to measure cylinder head temp. I like the idea of measuring it at the spark plug. B

Received that gauge blazing fast it only took 10 days total to ship from china to CA, its not big at all 45x27mm I believe its meant for use with personal computers towers because it has molex connectors, and it works from 5v DC so i had to also order "12v to 5v step down converter". Actually ordered second gauge, since it comes with temperature sensor as well i will use one to get oil temperature trough oil gauge, and second one trough spark plug will see how much difference in reading i will get.

im following this topic out of personal interest. seen every now and then simular-same diy CHT talked about, but never complited...
i have Controller boards/units from "Cooler cabinets" etc industrial units. plug&play units, working as stock STD with CHT-sensors. units work with 12vDC.
just got my custom adapters also for them eBay china Thermometers made for some pitbikes etc. shame that none seems to make them anymore 57mm long being suitable directly for 139qmb/qma.
my previous small electronics project was pc o-scope...
so what ever "katt" you find out on the topics subject, im very glad to read follow...
