When I try to start my scooter I have to crank it for about 10 seconds then it slowly catches and will run. Once started it runs great but it always has to crank and crank it seems to get going. The battery is charged and my valves are set correctly (I think) .003 intake and .004 exhaust. I am running an orange coil with the NGK Iridum plug, stock CDI. #31 pilot jet at 2 1/4 turns on the fuel screw. Any thoughts on what could make it start easier or is that the normal for these scooters?

well you can play with the enricher, by trying to unplug it while it is still screwed [if you remove it completely, too much air enters].On my scooter, the needle of the stock enricher was so long that it blcoked the enriching circuit in its default position. Be sure to have fuel in the carburetor too. You can do that by first engine is OFF [with the key], then you kick a few times, then, you put the key on ON, then you try to start with the battery. If you want to start with the kick, you put the kick where you start feeling resistance , you turn the key ON. Then you kick while having the throttle a bit open, like here www.youtube.com/watch?v=Po7MmXhaO1ETHe easiest tool to start a scooter is to spray a bit of carb cleaner in the air entrance before you start

Couple of things.
1. If youre still using your stock vac fuel shutoff and your bowl goes empty youre going to be cranking a little to pull vac on the shutoff to flow fuel and fill the bowl.
2. I see you use the orange cdi. Some have claimed harder starting with that component as it advances timing.
3. Try giving the throttle a twist immediatly/shortly after engaging the starter. This causes your accel pump to put a small glob of extra fuel in the intake, Its what i do on all carbed engines. Some twist the throttle a time or two before engaging the starter, i dont have much succsess with that particular method.
