I have a 1985 CH250 Honda Elite with 4,700 miles on it. Got it about 8 weeks ago and have put 1500 miles on it and have had zero issues. I recently had new tires and brakes put on and the idle increased by a friend of mine who knows what he’s doing when it comes to MC/scooters/ATVs/etc. Nothing else was changed.
I’ve noticed since I got it back there is a strange buzzing noise that seems like it is originating behind the instrument cluster or in front of the dash like in the radiator area. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it starts but the stoppage of the noise seems to coincide with when the carb switches over to the idle jet but could be a coincidence. I posted on Reddit and someone suggested it was a bad speedo cable but I believe I have ruled that out, as I d/c the cable and rode it and the noise persisted. They then suggested I post here and now here I am.
My friend that works on it for me lives 45+ mins away so I want to avoid taking it back to him if there’s some little thing I can look at and adjust myself but I’m at a loss at this point. The scooter seems to run and drive just fine despite the buzzing noise. Starting to think it could be a water pump bearing on its way out? Doesn’t seem to overheat or anything and I’m just assuming the water pump is near the radiator so it’s purely a guess. Beyond that it could be body buzz from panels rubbing but it wasn’t doing it before the new brakes and tires so I’m skeptical of that too.
If anyone has any ideas feel free to reply!

If its nit the puck, the cable or the speedo, and it is intermittent and speed dependent, it is possibly a tire balancing issue? If the gears in the speedo were put back slightly off or without grease they can get noisy.

Hell, it could even be the new pads rattling or intermittently rubbing.....

If the gears in the speedo were put back slightly off or without grease they can get noisy. I guess I haven’t fully ruled out the speedo linkage as I’ve not opened it up, just d/c the cable. I don’t have a lot of faith in my ability to take the wheel off and apart and not mess anything up putting it back together but I suspect a lack of grease on the puck. I don’t think the sound is related to the brakes because they operate fine and the buzzing sound is not affected at all one way or another by operating the brakes. Would a tire balancing issue cause a buzzing sound that sounds like a tattoo gun on a piece of sheet metal?
