Hello. I did some head work about a mouth ago and after that I fitted a new head gasket. Today I was doing some touch up on the under side of the engine which meant I had to remove the heat shroud. I spotted a small discoloration between the cylinder and the head. When I installed the cylinder head, I buttered it up pretty good with oil and it might just be that, but I'm not sure. Its not wet.

Looks like some carbon leaking out and some slight discoloration due to the heat. That does not look good to me... see what others think.

Ok thanks for your input. Looking up some pictures on google, a blown head gasket usually shows as a black "shadow" on the cylinder walls. but maybe mine is different?

It does looked like something could have escaped there, but it's hard to know and that's not much residue at all. If it gives no other symptoms, I wouldn't worry just yet. You can always do a compression test and keep an eye on it to see if it gets any worse.

Did you used a torque wrench?,did you make sure that surfaces were clean?pull the shroud off spray some soap mixed with water and start it up for a min look for a bubbles

To my eye, it does not have the wide 'spray' that escaping gases would generate. The few I have taken apart have shown a tendency to be non-flat in the area alongside the chain case. One head was significantly lowered and needed a lot of sanding to make it flat again. The other had similar but not nearly so deep imperfections in the same area. It was non-flat even though the machining marks were still visible. Could it be a dab of grease or lube that has darkened due to snagging some road dirt? tom

I was thinking something along the same lines.
Upon further inspection, I have come across a few more spots with the same discoloration on the cylinder head walls. But the one in the picture, is only one where the head and cylinder meet.

Is that particular spot alongside the internal oil passage cut into the upper surface of the cylinder? If so, it could be seepage of oil, which would be, given the amount, of no particular problem. Can you wipe it off with a rag? tom

No its in the bottom left just before the corner, its not wet and I would probaly need brake cleaner to get it off.
