Hi All,
I was adding weight to 3 of my clutch rollers and didn’t tighten the nut enough. It started to back out on a test run and the plastic fins on the shield started to shred off. Do I need these fins? Other than those being worn down the shield is fine.
Also, should I lock tight that nut?
Trying to figure out how to post pic. It’s essier said than done for me.

I agree with Handyman. My CVT case is vented 8 ways from Sunday and, I once had my variator nut come off and it destroyed my fan too. Even though I "might" not need it, I figure it will not hurt anything to have air moving around in there when stopped at a light, or somewhere when at idle.
Yes, I now use blue locktite on both the variator and the clutch nut but, one thing that will help you is that before you tighten the variator nut, squeeze your belt hard so it pulls down into the clutch pulley pretty well. Then as you tighten the nut, make sure your belt can still slide freely between the variator pulleys and it is not pinched. I then tighten it to spec and, before I close up the cvt case, I give the belt one more slide to make sure it is free. It is very easy to have the belt pinch in there and you think the nut is tight but once you run it the belt pulls out of the pinch and now your nut is loose. This happened to me once, and only once so now I am very good about checking this and using the thread locker. No issues since.
