During the first start up of the day, I let it warm up for a few minutes. When I go to take off, it shudders bad for around 3 seconds , then it smooths out while accelerating. It will do this every time I stop and start again until I drive it for a few minutes, then it stops shuddering upon take off. If I let it cool off for a few hours, it will shudder when taking off again until it warms up. I took the cover off and looked at the clutch and belt, but I had no idea what I was looking for.
Does anyone have any ideas what component in the drive train needs attention? I downloaded the service manual, but it doesn't say anything about "shuddering" anywhere in it.
Thanks,eh?
Brad, confused in Michigan.

Since it shudders when you're first getting going only, from what I gather of the description, I would suspect a clutch / clutch bell issue. If you take the clutch nut off, the bell comes off. Then you can see the clutch and bell to see if there is lots of glazing, any damage, etc... Could even be something like a broken clutch spring. I've had belts with slack made a scooter bog and shutter as it takes off too, till the slack got taken up some, but that shouldn't be the case with something stock. Belt should come apart before it gets that much slack.

A shudder when cold could also be engine misfire. Check that the engine is getting good fuel flow and a bit of enrichment when you open the throttle. When cold, atomization does not happen as well as when the engine is warmed up. Maybe mistaking misfire for clutch shudder? I dunno. tom

I have 3 Ice Bear Zodiacs trikes and the problem all the time was the rollers having flat spots I switched them to sliders never a problem since then.

I replaced the whole front assembly with the rollers and new sleeve and a new belt. The parts that I took out I couldn't find anything wrong with, but since I ordered the whole unit, I replaced it all, including the belt. It has not been shuddering what so ever. Tomorrow morning will really tell the tale. It always shuddered worst when it was cold.
Finding a way to holding it so I could loosen the nut was a real PITA.
Thanks for all of your help.
Brad

Yes, sliders are roller substitutes that are shaped more like a wedge. The shape apparently works better than rollers. There is a suggestion that the rollers and sliders will use different weights for the same performance. I think sliders will deform less or wear less than rollers due to the 'contact pattern' which is, I think, smaller than that of a slider. Rollers can develop flat spots, which means to me that there is a smaller contact area, i.e., the flat spot. I don't know if sliders develop flat spots... tom
