Hello all, I have a 50cc gy6 that I put a full 50mm big bore kit/ performance package on. came with new head, 150 carb, exhaust, cam, variator, air filter, really everything. after following 49cc scoot instructions and starting the bike it has a knocking/ticking noise. I thought it may be a bad piston/cylinder so the company sent me a new one. still knocking, now I figured it was bottom end so I got a brand new motor and still knocking. so I'm at a loss. I don't see any marks on piston, head, or spark plug from it touching anywhere but added extra washer to the spark plug and still making noise. only thing left is to add 2nd base gasket and hope that does it. the season is winding down and I'm pretty upset. anyone had this problem and fixed it or any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much...

I wonder if you're setting the valves wrong?
Are you sure you have the timing chain tensioner installed properly?

yes chain tensioner is correct, am goin to try smaller on the valve lash. I had them at .004-.005. I will try for .002-.003 and see what happens.

and you are sure its not the piston motion or loose writst clip/wrist pin thats banging...
if it makes a loud "ding" sound, like a bell, check your clips and pin.

Maybe a recording of the noise in question would clarify. I adjust the valves a bit tighter than the originally noted settings, .002 I and .003 E. Other things that make noise are the oil pump chain, the variator if loose, or the clutch if it is loose or has damaged internal parts. When you adjust the valves, be sure to rotate the engine manually a few turns before doing the adjustment, and be sure the mark is on T and the two cam sprocket small holes aligned with the cam cover gasket surface. You can get mis-adjusted valve clearances if they are adjusted with the cam in the wrong place. tom

Yay, finally have NO more knocking. so I ended up loosening the head/rocker nuts to retorque them then rolled the engine by hand a few times B4 readjusting the valves .002 in .003 ex and OMG now it sounds perfect. I'm so happy, finally it sounds normal, but not stock. this bike sounds like a motorcycle with the bbk, exhaust, A9 cam, and all the other goodies. thanks so much for all the good info. I don't think I ever rolled it over a couple times before setting the valves so they were probably just really loose I'm guessing. Anyway, I'm pumped. thanks again. I'm hitting the streets......
