So I swapped a motor in my scooter (the old one was shot) and now when it reaches a certain rpm it starts to drop out, like the spark is being doused or it's not getting fuel. It runs great up til that point. It's not a throttle position issue, since I can open it up climbing hills and it runs fine at those lower revs. It's only when it reaches a certain rev limit, consistently. I have heard of rev limiters being intalled on these things, but it wasn't an issue with the last motor, so I can't imagine that that would be the problem. Ideas?
Thanks!

Swapped just the engine or engine, wiring harness, electrical components too ?

Sorry everyone, I know you have heard this before... pull the plug and let us see the white part of the plug. What you are describing could be as simple as your running to rich. If that is the case, a jet change might cure your problems
is the new to you a new engine, or is it a used engine, but new to you? Are there any mods on the bike?

Cover 1/4 of your air filter intake (to enrich the mixture) and see if that increases or decreases the problem.

I'll do a plug chop tomorrow and see how she looks, with a description. The motor was purhased used. However, a 100cc big bore kit was installed. This said, the identical kit in an identical/sister scooter was installed a year ago with no issues-- same carb, same CDI, same everything- so it's very strange that this one is producing this problem. It should also be noted that I had a second 100cc bb kit on hand and swapped it out- same high rpm stumbling issue. The only untested and previously used component is the block (everything from the jug down)- all electronics are stock to that scooter. Anyway, I'll let her rip and have a peek at the plug tomorrow and get back. Thanks for the quick responses!

The fact that you are using the old wireing would seem to say that your using the old CDI. That’s a good thing as any sort of rev limiter would be in the CDI and the old CDI would not have grown one. The fact that it pulls fine up hills would tend to make me think it is not a fuel delivery issue like (filter or petcock)

FIXED. It seems that there was some sort of rev limiter after all. There was a separate box wired into the ignition circuit (green and red/black wires) which I hadn't noticed before. For the sake of trial and error I unplugged it and went for a spin and the trouble resolved instantly- it runs like a champ. Thanks for the help, all!
