I tried to sand the inner part of the rim to improve braking but it didnt help much, any ideas?

Usually sanding/scuffing drum & shoes helps glazed , noisy brakes . Besides properly ajusted shoes/ cable . Thats about it. Make sure brake shoes are clean & not oily etc. Unless shoes are worn , then thats another story.

It will last as long as your pads are healthy. If your adjustment nut has to be really far in to activate the rear brakes, there's a good chance the pads are very worn and need replacing.

A quick sand blast is a good idea . A tight set of brake shoe springs will kill the squeak most times !
