I went to the H2Oi carr show in Ocean City, MD on Saturday night. Had fun, which I'll post more about HERE later. I left
OC just before 1AM.
I was about 2.5 miles from home when a deer ran out in front of me. I think I was going 35-40MPH at that point and making trumpet sounds in my helmet (lol anything to stay awake/alert at ~2:45AM). I remember seeing the deer and then being on the road after, but nothing between.
A car stopped, some just drove by. The guy asked what happened and I said deer. I asked if he could help get the scooter off of me and he said he had to pull up and then drove away, not to be seen again. What a dickhead move.
I couldn't move my left arm, so I figured I had broken my collar bone. Managed to get the scoot up on the stand and call my father for a ride. A State Trooper drove by and then turned around to check on me. Asked what happened and I said I think it was a deer, but I can't remember for sure. He said it was definitely a deer, because there was fur on the front of the scooter. Asked if I wanted an ambulance a couple of times and I said no thanks.
I collected what I could see of my belongings on the road and my father showed up with the truck. By then another officer had pulled over and the two cops loaded the scoot in the truck for me. I picked up more stuff in the road while the officer wrote an accident report.
Headed home and then went to the ER. By then I was limping a little, also on the left side (same as the hurt shoulder). I didn't complain about anything but the shoulder. They did x-rays and a CT scan. The nurse and doctor didn't know what to do when they saw the scans. Doc called an orthopedic specialist, who also didn't know for sure. It turns out that I broke not just the clavicle (collar bone), but also 2 ribs and the scapula (shoulder blade). The nurse said he hadn't seen that in 30 years of work, so that made me feel great.
They said an ambulance was on it's way to transport me to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. That ride felt like forever (1hr15min) because I was nauseated and holding a sickness bag for half of the ride. I don't get car sick, but it's weird in the back of an ambulance.
Got to the hospital and about 10 people came at me at one. Asking questions, checking vitals, ripping my clothes off... all at once. Figures, I finally have two attractive women tearing my pants off together feverishly, and this is why. lol Once the initial stuff was done, it was much more calm. That's standard procedure in the trauma unit.
They did a CT scan of my head and neck because I had hit my head. I have a contusion on the right side (hit on the left), the nurse said probably from the brain bouncing into that side. 6 hours later, they did another scan to make sure it was stable and it was. They gave me anti-seizure meds to take for a week because they said the head injury put me at serious risk for a seizure. Told me to reduce screen time as much as possible.. so here I am typing one handed.
They eventually decided not to do surgery on the scapula. Said there's still a chance I need surgery though, and I've got a follow up on the 10th. I may also need physical therapy, which I guess they'll decide then.
They said all of the things I broke are most commonly non-op. Ribs are rarely treated unless they are a danger to puncture an organ. The clavicle and scapula are both surrounded by lots of muscle, so they often heal on their own fine. Breaking both the clavicle and scapula does leave me with what they caled a floating shoulder though. They gave me strong pain meds, but I have just been taking tylenol and advil. It hurts plenty, but I'm trying to stay off of the strong stuff if I can.
By the time I could get out of Shock Trauma at about 8PM last night, my knee was way worse. They asked if I wanted them to look at it, and I said I just wanna go home now. By then I hadn't drank anything for about 25 hours, ate in 28-29 hours, or slept in ~ 37-38 hours.
Got home and it took me 10 minutes to get out of the car and to a bedroom because my knee wasn't cooperating. Today, all is the same. I've also got small amounts of road rash on my left elbow, shoulder, and foot. I was wearing an armored jacket and flannel over a t-shirt and jeans with leather armored gloves and a full face helmet. Athletic shoes were ate through on one side a bit. To the "I don't need a helmet" crowd... I prob wouldn't be here if not for it. It knocked me out with a helmet on. I will get a video of it up eventually, and you'll see there wasn't much time to do anything. I can analyze what I could have done better (*grab more brake), but I prob would have wrecked anyway.
T2 doesn't look nearly as bad as I'd think, but that's no more than a quick glance. It's still in the truck because dad can't get it out alone.
Just wanted to mention that everyone I dealt with in the hospitals and ambulance were great. The trauma team was impressive in action and stayed busy but always managed to be friendly and courteous. The nurse that I had couldn't have been any better.
So, if you noticed that I actually went near two days without logging in, that's why. Again, I'll get a vid up and maybe some pics of my gear, but I'm tired of typing and such right now.
