So I’ve had my bike since July, bought new. Now has just under 1600km (China miles) and the battery is no longer turning over the motor. I installed a 50mm BBK at 264 China miles 😋 (included this information for situational understanding-not to gloat) Bike runs smooth once started via kickstart. Starter will turn the motor over slowly once or twice before quitting almost completely. I checked the voltage acros the terminals after the bike was ridden for 3km 2.5hours before hand. Ambient temp was 74F. Voltage read 12.44Vdc. Should I use a float charger to bring it back up? Or just go buy a brand spankin’ new volt box for a cool $60? Any good brands y’all recommend?

you can also take it to a auto parts store and they will test it for you.for free i think.

Google the forum on how to see if your battery is dead. That test has been written up a bunch. But your battery is dead. You should read 13.6 across it. Doesn’t have enough juice to push the starter. Many bikes don’t need a battery when they are running.

That $60 price for a 5Ah 12 battery was quoted to me by the dealer that sold me the bike... I can buy a battery for my wife’s Elantra for $75-90 ($100 - core charge). The “dudebro” was trying to tell me how “complicated” it was to change it out...

It’s a 5L-BS, but really just the 5L part. You can get that size anywhere... autozone, etc

If you can borrow a charger, you could charge it over night(low amp) and check the voltage and try starting it.
If the battery is good, you should see low 13v numbers.
Second if you can get/borrow a battery booster and try starting as well. This way you can rule out the starter being tired.

Charge it over night. When you hook a voltmeter across it (and it’s not running) it should read 13.3-13.6. Try the electric start. It’ll dip and should come back up. If it dips below 9, it’’s toast.

Ok, so I finally replaced the battery. Ended up getting a maintenance free champion 5L from pep boys (I had a 10$ coupon) for $40.
The kick-start committed suicide. It jams up on the bottom of the kick, but I was able to free it up and bring it to rest position. I believe the half gear for the kickstart inside the cvt case is toast.
Now from using the kickstart so much (it’s my daily commuter) I’m kinda worried about the starting gear, the starter at first spun but didnt catch and turn over the bike the first few times after replacing the battery.
I’ve rode the scoot about 10 miles since the battery change and it started 3 separate times with 0 issues (no running out without turnover).
Should I remove the cvt case and see what’s up? Any advice would be appreciated. I’m mechanically inclined, but my knowledge of scooters is novice at best. And my budget is very low.

i would becouse if something broke off on the kick starter and it gets into your clutch or varater it will cost a lot more to fix.

Took a chance, removed cover. Found 3 broken kickstart gear teeth on the bottom of the case. Luckily it was caked in grease so the broken teeth stuck to the case. Also got to inspect my belt (good condition!) and changed the oil. Busy day! Took it out for a quick run, started no problem and no runout. I’m enjoying this and adding a skill.

Another thing to consider, a bbk could be straining your starter as theres more air to compress in the cylinder. There are starters available that have higher output.
Some scoot owners have reported improved starts upgrading the battery wires from 8ga to 6ga for improved current flow to the starter.
As for the electric starter teeth not catching, there should be a throwout gear (we call them a bendix in scoot world) that may be losing its springiness. Theres been a thread sometime ago on rebuilding a bendix, but they're cheap online (check partsforscooters.com - amazing business, friendly staff, great return/replacement policy, and fast shipping).
And keep us updated on your results
