When i used USB thing that has LCD that shows voltage i hooked it up to some +12v wire inside harness that was not connected anywhere, but it only was powered on once key in ON position. Reason for that i did not want homeless people to charge their phones trough my scooter USB if i park somewhere overnight because if you simply hook up to the battery it will be powered all the time.

If you connect directly to the battery, any load you put on it (charging a phone for example) will drain the battery some. If the engine is running, the load from a phone charging should have hardly any affect on the electrical system.

I connected a 12V power port directly to my battery with a 10A circuit breaker. I use the port to charge my battery, run my fuel transfer pump, monitor my battery and charging voltage, and charge my phone.
