I recently purchased a 2008 genuine buddy for cheap in non running condition that has sat for a few years not running. I have cleaned the carbuerator, it has fresh gas, and I have also checked the crank seals and they appear dry. I have also installed a new top end as the old cylinder had vertical scratches to the cylinder wall. It has good compression also and also has good spark. The problem is that I cannot get it to fire, it will not even make a pop or show any signs of trying to run at all! I have also checked the reeds an they are not leaking any air. What am i missing here? Could I have a bad cdi even though I have spark?

Will it fire at all with a small amount of fuel added to the cylinder through the spark plug hole?

Are you fitting the air filter assy and is it sealed up real snug, needs to be done, and the new piston in the right way??
Geoff, a good clean around that reed valve won,t help it start but it needs doing

Geoff, a good clean around that reed valve won,t help it start but it needs doing I tried it with and without the air box, and yes the new piston is also in the right way. I do need to do a thorough cleaning on this bike as it sat outside for awhile but I was just trying to get it running first before I do.

I also forgot to mention that when I first got it it did not have spark at all and I found corrosion on the terminals going to the cdi and I cleaned it and now it has a good strong blue spark. But I was wondering if maybe the cdi could still have some sort of liquid damage making it not fire correctly?

It does have spark correct ? Pull the air cleaner and do the below .
Prime the carb , open the throttle wide open then cover the intake side of the carb so no air goes into it and hit the start button a few times . When you feel fuel on your hand move your hand keep the throttle pinned and hit the button it will fire up just keep it running .

I went as far as putting fuel directly into the spark plug hole and it still will not fire.

The Yamaha cdi,s are pretty bullet proof I,he got a fifteen year old one and a thirty year old one going strong,is the muffler blocked?? Check the bottom of the crankcase for fluid build up,keep at it we,rooting for you.

Is it the OEM CDI? I had a Hyosung that had an aftermarket CDI, I got spark but the CDI was sending it at the wrong time. Bought an OEM CDI and it started first kick. I don't know if the Genuine scoots are as temperamental.

Not possible sorry , If it has spark at all it will fire with that method! Priming and choking the motor manually like that will start a motor that sat for 10 years or wake a dead man !! You have a other issues did you try the ignition switch or on off button . When they set weird things happen dust and dirt stop things from working .
Buddy's are pretty solid PGO makes them

Spray easy start down carb. If no start with that then problems. Not sure the U.S. equivalent is of easy start but used for starting diesels when all else fails.
